Star Trek

The popularity of the Star Trek television and film franchise has led to numerous games. The quality of the games have usually left a lot to be desired despite a large mod scene and community of loyal fans.

Concepts

2D

Sure, these days have almost every game sporting the newfangled 3D, but way back when, everyone had to live with plain old 2D. 2D, or two dimensions, limit the game to scrolling backgrounds, but some games even now make use of this basic concept.
4X

Strategy games which encourage users to eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate.
Achievements

Achievements are extra challenges added into video games that sometimes carry a point value or unlock bonus material, and are sometimes solely for bragging rights.
Aggro

Grabbing the attention of a nearby enemy NPC. Usually leads to them attacking you.
Aliens

Extraterrestrials appear in many, many video games in a massive variety of styles. Sometimes they're evil bloodthirsty invaders, sometimes they're adorably cuddly sidekicks, and sometimes they're very much like us.
Alternate Reality

Alternate realities are worlds that exists next to, in parallel of, or in place of our own.
Ambient Occlusion

Ambient Occlusion attempts to realistically depict the way light reflects off surfaces and radiates throughout an area.
Anniversary Edition

A special remake, re-release, collection, or installment of a series that celebrates a milestone.
Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence, or AI, commonly refers to the programmed behaviors of NPCs in a game, whether it's the fact that a soldier takes cover behind a wall in Gears of War, or that townspeople cheer upon your arrival to their village in Fable.
Attributes

Attributes are a numerical representation of a character's abilities who have their roots in RPGs. Today, attributes have spilled over to a wide range of game genres.
Bink Video

A proprietary video codec (.bik extension) developed by RAD Game Tools and used in a very large number of video games.
Boob Slider

The Boob Slider is an interface that allows players to interactively increase or decrease the size of a character's breasts.
Borg

A pseudo-race of humanoids, infected and transformed by cybernetic implants into mechanical zombies controlled by a Collective intelligence that seeks to absorb all life into itself.
Bots

AI Bots are computer-controlled game characters that substitute for characters that are otherwise typically played by a human, and are most commonly found in multiplayer games.
Breast Bounce

The deliberate animation of breasts, either in an exaggerated fashion meant to titillate, or as a means to conform to more realistic physics.
Bromance

A condition in which two male characters are socially close, but not sexually or romantically, and are often partners.
Build Queues

A Build Queue allows a production unit or structure to immediately build a new unit once the current unit is finished building.
Buttstroke

To strike someone with the butt, or stock, of a rifle. The act of using a non-handgun firearm as a blunt weapon.
Canceled Games

Games get canceled for a variety of reasons whether it's financial trouble, a problem with personnel or the developer simply couldn't find a publisher willing to release their title.
Capture The Flag

A game in which the object is to capture and return the opponents flag to your base. Typically used in multiplayer first-person shooter games.
Cardassian

In the Star Trek Universe, a race of aliens originating on the planet Cardassia Prime. Completely paranoid, both of outsiders and their own people, the Cardassians are a race that has pushed itself to military efficiency.
Character Creation

Character Creation refers to characters created by players themselves, rather than developers.
Cheating Death

A different take on the commonplace video game death. Different ways to avoid death can include time travel, as in Prince of Persia, or maybe a minigame where the character can "escape" death, as in Prey.
Chest-High Walls

Chest-High Walls appear regularly in video games, particularly in third-person-shooters with cover mechanics.
Cider

Cider a Windows compatibility layer optimized for gaming which is a proprietary extension of WINE that enables PC games to run on Intel powered Macs with little or no modification.
Clan

A group of people who play a game or games together. Can be a team for competition or just for fun.
Classes

Classes are different archetypes and playstyles that players can choose to play their game with.
Cloak

Cloaking is to become invisible, or become close to invisible depending on strength of the ability or item.
Codependent Unlimited Revival

Game mechanic that allows a player to respawn as long as at least one teammate is alive.
Collective Conciousness

Collective consciousness is best defined as a group or race of beings possessing no minds of their own, but act and are controlled in service of a greater overall purpose, much like ants. They make great villains!
