This came out of the EA earnings call. Someone asked if the delay of the film (Harrison hurting his ankle) effects the game. Soderland replied with:

"As it relates to Star Wars, we’ve shown parts from the game today, so you know that what we’re building is more rooted in the traditional Star Wars universe and not so much necessarily linked to the movies being made. And that’s just because we wanted to make a game that celebrated the history of Star Wars.

Obviously there will be things in there that are somewhat tied to the new movie. I wouldn’t say that we have a particular tie to the movie. Now, obviously we would prefer to be close to the movie, but I wouldn’t say that we’re directly tied to it."

What I find interesting is what he effectively says is "It's not going to be a movie tie in and mostly be about the older films" and yet he says "Obviously there will be things in there that are somewhat tied to the new movie". Don't these two statements seem at odds to anyone else? I wonder if it means it won't have any plot or anything like that, but maybe have say, the new X-Wing skin as an unlock.

Anyone else want to ruminate?

For some reason the link isn't directing to the page I thought it was going to so to find the area in the quote just search "Mike Olson" and it's his question that prompts the reply. For more fun stuff search "Brian Pitz" to see someone saying "what would it take for you to annualise Battlefield?" and EA's reply.

I just hope Battlefront is stitched together with a bit more...reliability than the latest Battlefield releases. I think the two console Battlefront games are pretty solid shooters that probably wouldn't stand up in technical prowess/gameplay to anyone who doesn't have nostalgia for the both of them, but they also, y'know, worked. I'm worried we won't get a working Battlefront until halfway through the development of Battlefront 4.

I don't know, that statement is too vague to really get much out of. Maybe the campaign will have some sort of plot references to the new films? Could be that, could just be some skins what look like things that come out of that new film like.

@corruptedevil: Considering DICE's latest trend of having factions be military branches (ie. the US in BF3 are just the US Marines) I would be surprised if the Imperial faction wasn't the 501st

The 501st isn't a branch though, they are a specific brigade in the Stormtrooper forces that are considered the best of the best and are the only brigade to still be entirely composed of clones.

For a second, there, I thought you were talking about the PS2 game.

@corruptedevil: fair enough with the 501st being tol small to represent a whole faction but I question your statement they are entirely all clones. By 10 bby less than a third of stormtroopers were clones and by 0 bby clone troopers with Fett dna hadnt been produced for 12 years during all which time Vader had been cherrypicking the best new recruits from other units. Consider that it's the 501st that escorted Vader onto the Tantative IV and the officer that speaks does so without Fetts voice.
