Star Wars: Dark Forces is a PC shooter that was released after the success of the Doom franchise and is the first game in the Dark Forces franchise. Borrowing from the Doom gameplay style, Lucas Arts created Dark Forces which pits you against the Empire in the Star Wars universe.
Star Wars: Dark Forces follows Kyle Katarn from his initial mission to steal the Death Star plans to his investigation into the Imperial Dark Trooper project.
After the first mission (stealing the Death Star plans) you hear of a new kind of storm trooper, the dark trooper. You investigate a rebel city that's been decimated by the dark troopers as their first test. Later Kyle attempts to put an end to the mining operations vital to the production of the Dark Troopers. It is there that you fight the Phase 1 Dark Trooper.
A few levels later (and after rescuing a rebel spy from a very maze-like prison) you fight the Phase 2 Dark Trooper. Darth Vader puts a bounty on your head and are attacked by Boba Fett at the end of one of the levels.
Finally, you sneak aboard a smuggler shuttle heading to the Executioner (Star Destroyer), then to another shuttle to get to the huge ship that holds the Dark Troopers. This level is where you finally meet a vast army of Dark Troopers, Phase 1 and Phase 2. This is also where you get your final weapon, the Phase 2 Dark Trooper's own gun, with both plasma and missile firing capabilities (if you had not already typed the cheat code "lamaxout" to get all the weapons).
At the end of the final level you are greeted by the General who created the Dark Troopers who has a special suit made just to fight you...the Phase 3. Quicker and more armored than the Phase 2, this boss was hard to hit. After lying him low, you destroy the ship and we hear Darth Vader say that the force is strong with this one...
Dark Troopers
Phase 1: A well armored black stormtrooper that has a long sword and charges quickly. Back up constantly and fire and you'll kill this guy quick.
Phase 2: This dark trooper flys, shoots plasma, and missiles. Very hard to hit and lots of heath.
Phase 3: The final boss made faster than previous types.

Reception
Dark Forces was well-received at launch and was the eleventh best selling game from 1993 to 1999. However, many critics felt the game was more of a Doom clone and was considered unoriginal, while others found the lack of multiplayer and lightsaber unacceptable.System Requirements
