A troubled youth with a lightsaber and bad attitude? Duude!
I must say, being a huge Star Wars fan (who isn't these days) I had ginormous expectations for this game when it first came out. But then I completely forgot about it, until I stumbled upon it in the "Used"-section of the local Gamestop about a year later. "Why not?", I thought and purchased it on the spot. Then I came home, and played it for a solid 6 hours. My opinion about it? Well...
It's far from a bad game, it's actually quite brilliant. The first 3 hours, at least. You see, it becomes a tad repetitive to hack enormous monsters to death, only to then find yourself being surrounded by annoying, Force-resistant things trying to tear you apart. The whole Force-thing is super fun to use on the first levels, as you only face Stormtroopers and similar things that are easy to fling around. On later levels, however, you encounter foes that you cannot use the Force on, and you must therefore hack the foes to death with your (compared to your Force powers) very boring lightsaber. It's like you develop a pattern; hack big foes to death with lightsaber, electrify slightly smaller foes with Force Lightening and Force Grip the smallest foes into a cliff. So it becomes very repetitive, and the only things driving you forward are the kick-ass story, the amazing graphics and the occasional chance to Force Grip a Stormtrooper and sadistically let him hang in the air while you electrify him. Fun, yes, but not enough to lift the whole game.
Still, I think you should buy The Force Unleashed, beneath all the minor issues it's actually a fun game. Especially if you're a Star Wars fan, then this game is a given buy for you. The story's great, the graphics are awesome and the Force Powers are beyond awesome. Minor issues do occur, but on the whole, this game could've done a whole lot worse.
