I've been asking all over the internet and no one responds so I took some pictures since the print screen button doesn't seem to work in the game. As you can see it looks like shit. this is on HIGH settings although it looks the same on medium and on low so my guess is that it's for some reason stuck on low no matter what I choose. Can anyone confirm that this a bug I'm having or are the textures supposed to be this frickin blurry? And it's not the photos, it really looks that blurry and low-res in game.
Star Wars: The Old Republic
Game » consists of 5 releases. Released Dec 20, 2011
Star Wars: The Old Republic is a massively-multiplayer role-playing game set 300 years after the events of BioWare's Knights of the Old Republic series, but still approximately 3,600 years before the events of the films.
Are the textures really this bad?
No, that's either on incredibly low settings or the textures haven't properly loaded in. It's not a brilliant looking game, but it's not that bad.
Better than most MMO's, I'll post some screenshots of it running on high settings when I'm at home.
Looks like you have it set on lowest settings, or your textures are bugged and not loading up proper.
Totalhalibut on youtube said in one of his videos that he thought the graphics has been improved a bit since the Beta, and the Beta did not look that horrible on my machine. So i'm thinking your settings are real low, or maybe you need to check the cache on your files.
That is clearly a texture streaming bug. I had the same thing sometimes during the open beta a couple of weeks ago.
This appears to be a high quality texture loading bug that you are experiencing. What you are seeing are the stand-in textures that are there as the high quality textures load in. If you are seeing these and they are not changing to high quality textures, you are either on the lowest setting or you are experiencing an error. This is not normal, and it's the first time I've seen someone post something like this regarding SW:TOR.
You should report this bug and then perhaps consider a reinstall of the game if you have to. It should not look like that.

I believe the beta had certain setting deactivated, but there's definitely no big change.
This is definitely just a texture pop-in bug.

It did, cause i was not able to change many of the settings, they where grayed out. But as far as the early access game goes, i have no clue how it looks compared to the beta, i can only go by what i hear other people who are playing it now says.
@dagas: Looks like you're having yourself a texture loading bug. This was a big issue in the last beta build. Not sure if it's related to graphic cards/settings, but no, that is not how the textures are supposed to look.
It's almost like it does that Mass Effect/Unreal Engine texture loading, but bugs out before loading.
I have the same, having played the beta I'm sure this is a technical problem. In the beta textures were perfectly fine and some seem okay, but other look awful. Don't think Bioware have even acknowledged it yet. The beta ran as smooth as butter and looked solid, this seems like a step back having come across a number of issues technically.
Decided not to play until it's fixed, but it's worrying.

Like I said it looks like that no matter if it's set to low, medium or high. I've reported it, see what happens. It never loads in any higher version of the textures. I had the same problem during beta so I did a fresh install yesterday, but it's still there.

You know your keyboard has a screen capture button built in right?
Yup, but like I said it doesn't work in this game. All I get when I paste the screenshot into paint is a pure black picture.
Yea, that's gotta be a texture error/bug. I'm running on low everything (game is actually fairly demanding if you want to run High or Ultra or whatever it is), and overall things look pretty good for an MMO.
@dagas: Frankly, if you had this same issue during the beta, it may be your graphics card. I'm not sure what you have, but it may have some serious issues. This is clearly a high quality textures not loading in bug, but then, if the software isn't doing it, then the hardware may be.
I've been having a lot of texture pop-in or just not really loading problems since I've starting playing in Early Access. Hopefully they'll patch it soon enough but at least I can still play the game.
I was able to create my toons this morning and even at low, it looked really good. I really hope people dont' quit the game even for a little bit just because a texture didn't load or took to long to load. Play the game, not the stupid visuals.
I ripped out the video card and played on my build in Intel HD2000 and it looks better so it is my video card that is broken. At least now I know.

I am playing, but it looks so bad it hurts the cutscenes. Some NPC's look even worse than that and just looks like a gray blur. I will however continue to play until I buy a new video card because I still enjoy the game.
Thats good to hear that you won't let it stop you from playing but the HD5670.... man get rid of that. Budget cards belong in grandma's pc. :D
@dagas: Your card isn't "broken", its most likely a driver issue be it on the games side or drivers side.
It might have something more to do with those latest drivers. I stayed at 11.07 and didn't have that issue.

Well I went and impulse bought a Radeon HD6850 even though it was a bit over my budget but they didn't have any 6670. Now Everything is working as it should. I'm using the same drivers as before.

You know what you're doing, right? You're not going to blow out your PSU?
I get nervous when people upgrade computer parts on a whim.
Hmm interesting, I noticed that when you change the texture settings from medium to high (and vice-versa) it does bugger all. Some folks are saying it's Bioware who haven't got high res textures into the game. I know they are adding AA very shortly but heard nothing from them concerning this. Might try some older drivers to see if that fixes anything.
Might be an ATI problem.
Thats an oddly epic picture. Really captures the feeling of the Star Wars universe. Big awesome stuff.@dagas: Here's mine on high as you can see, it's not nearly that bad. Btw, pressing the print screen button puts the screenshots in Documents/Star Wars - The Old Republic/Screenshots
I have random problems with the textures not loading in properly right away. I'm running a less than great computer though, and my interent connection is pretty not great, and both of my servers are very often in the 'Full' + queue mode, so really everything is stacked against me :/ Last night was better than it had ever been though, so here's hoping things are figuring themselves out. :)
That looks like the proper textures aren't loading though.
I posted this on the official SWTOR forums.
These are some screenshots from MMO Champion showing how the game should look, and below I've posted some pictures that show some of the odd textures. It does seem to affect certain textures as others look okay. Picture 1 Picture 2 Picture 3 Picture 4 Picture 5 Click on the image for a bigger version. As you can see, some textures don't look bad, but compare them to how they should look at you should see the weird issue. Obviously the game is still playable and I have been doing so. But this bothered me and wondering what is the cause. |
I posted this on the same thread on the official SWTOR forums. A possible fix I found.
A POSSIBLE FIX!!!
Okay folks, think I might have a fix for at least the problems people like myself have had with textures. I owe it all down to playing Race Driver: Grid on Steam. So started that game up and noticed that despite putting car textures to ultra the textures of the cars in game were awful. This left me puzzled, at first I didn't put one and one together. Looked on the Steam forums and someone mentioned Texture Filtering Quality.
So, I went into the Catalyst Control Center for ATI and turned Texture Filtering Quality from performance to High Quality. Started up GRID and textures were great. Then that bulb above my head sounded off and I decided to start up SWTOR and.... BAM! Perfect textures have returned. Need proof, below are some pictures and I'll describe how I did it again.
Picture 1 (with texture issue)
Picture 2 (with texture issue)
Picture 3 (with texture issue)
ATI users:
- Simply go into your Catalyst Control Panel (right click desktop and you'll see it).
- Go to the 'Gaming' sub menu and you'll see a list of sliders.
- Find Catalyst A.I and move the slider to 'High Quality' and Apply.
Simple, and should hopefully fix the issue I've been having. Don't have an Nvidia card but I suspect the process is reasonably similar. Any Nvidia users who are able to look into it, I'd appreciate it. I know Nvidia have a similar program anyways.
Only issue I have come across is performance which as taken a slight knock, I'll look into that though. I suspect it will have to do with the workaround for textures to work properly who knows. But still, it's something. who knows. But still, it's something.
