I haven't played the first one in years but I'm getting excited about 2 coming out. Will playing a bunch of 1 before 2 comes out taint my experience, or will it make me appreciate everything much more?

Depends on how long ago you played the first and how much of the story you remember or want to revisit.
Don't play it for the game mechanics imo.
If you want to go thought the story arc again tho then do it.
