Based on the 1994 film (starring Kurt Russel), Stargate involves a team of adventurers traveling through an ancient ring device, known as the Stargate, which creates a stable wormhole to hundreds of other worlds. There was then a television series, Stargate SG-1, which continued the story of the movie and went on for ten seasons. The spin off, Stargate Atlantis, was created in 2004 and was dropped in its fifth season. A third series, Stargate Universe lasted for 2 seasons after cancellation due to mixed reviews and poor viewership figures. There have been two Direct-to-DVD films for SG-1; The Ark of Truth, which finished the Ori story arc, and Continuum, which ended the story arc regarding the clones of the system lord Baal. A third movie, named Extinction, was planned, but was shelved indefinitely following Stargate Universe's cancellation according to executive producer Joseph Mallozi.
