I'm a huge fan of the Categories, so I use:

BEATEN
EXPANSIONS
INFINITE
(games that don't end)
MULTIPLAYER
NOT STARTED
UNBEATEN

What about you?

I don't really have enough Steam games to need a sorting method.

@HawkxSx: You sir inspired me to actually organize my games. Thanks.

Currently Playing
Finished
Infinite
Multiplayer
To Finish (I was gonna put this as Backlog but that would put it before currently playing which my OCD would not allow)

You can organize games on Steam? I thought it was all just alphabetical.
Shit. Two categories then:

  1. Games I Play
  2. Games I Bought on Steam Sales
#9 Posted by mylifeforAiur (3483 posts) -

2 categories:

  • Steam games
  • Non-Steam games
#10 Posted by HawkSE (216 posts) -

I'm thinking of reorganizing again. I like what I have, and it helps me keep track and focus on completing games.

I honestly had no idea you could sort into custom categories. Mind semi-blown.

Giant alphabetical list of Steam games. Columns of three. I have exactly 168 Steam games.

Disc games go in a pile on top of my dresser. I have about 25 PS3 games, and several more 360 games.

I have my games library set to "list" and just leave them organized by installed/uninstalled followed by alphabetical order.  Basically the same as it was in the old Steam interface.  That's how I like it.

#17 Posted by Tordah (2478 posts) -

I have 4 categories right now:

  • Indie (self-explanatory)
  • Multiplayer (ditto)
  • Old games (i.e., games from 2004 or older)
  • New games (here goes everything newer than 2004)

Basically, I drew my line for new games with Half-Life 2, as I feel that game represents a "generation shift" in PC games. It still feels very modern and fresh, even though it's 6 years old now.

He has done the same to me!

I've organised them into three groups:
  • Installed
  • Mac Games
  • Not Installed

The reason I've had to create a 'Mac Games' group, even though I don't actually have a Mac, is due to the fact when I bought the Civ IV pack during the Steam sales they were kind enough to gift me with a copy of each game for both platforms! (Oh joy...)

I don't.
It's all a big mess.

#20 Posted by JoeyRavn (4964 posts) -
  1. Beaten: Games I've beaten (either the main storyline or all the Achievements) and I'm not actively playing. 9 games to date.
  2. Multiplayer: Duh. Even if I'm not playing them, I can't consider them "beaten", as they are potentially infinite. 12 games to date.
  3. Not Started: Bought them, but haven't started them yet. My little Steam backlog. 4 games to date.
  4. Unfinished: Games I'm (or have started) playing, but not really done with. 8 games to date.

I only have 32 games on my account, so I don't really need many categories...
#21 Posted by Capum15 (4870 posts) -

Alphabetically, then just Favorites and "The rest".

#22 Posted by phrosnite (3518 posts) -

I have so few games on steam(17) that I don't need to sort them. I use the thing that shows the huge game icon thingies...

#23 Posted by HaroldoNVU (591 posts) -

As of this moment it's:

  • Action (Altitude, Lugaru, Mount & Blade: Warband...)
  • Action-Adventure (Aquaria, Psychonauts, Batman: Arkham Asylum...)
  • Adventure (Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse, Loom, Machinarium...)
  • Card (Poker Night at the Inventory, Magic: the Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers)
  • Demo
  • Driving (TrackMania Nations Forever)
  • Mod  (Zombie Panic - Source; Age of Chivalry, Dystopia...)
  • Music (AudioSurf, Beat Hazard, The Polynomial...)
  • Platformer (Super Meat Boy)
  • Puzzle (Braid, Portal; World of Goo...)
  • RPG (Torchlight; Recettear; Freedom Force...)
  • Shooter (Team Fortress 2; Bioshock 2; Alien Swarm...)
  • Simulation (Tropico, Tropico 3, Moonbase Alpha...)
  • Strategy (Plants vs Zombies)
Inside the Categories they're listed alphabetically. And yeah, some of those example might not be perfect matches with the genre, I'm aware.

I don't use Steam. And the only system I am using for my boxed games at the moment is by System.

#25 Posted by nukesniper (1312 posts) -

Alphabetical, with Portal and Audiosurf at the top as Favorites.

#26 Posted by Winternet (8014 posts) -

I don't even know that you could do that. I don't think I need. I just scroll down to what I want (not that I need to do much scrolling)

#27 Posted by Tordah (2478 posts) -

I kinda wish you could have multiple tags for a game, and be able to sort your games so that it appears in both categories. For instance, I have Altitude tagged as "indie", but it could just as well fit into my "multiplayer" category. However, that would require a major redesign of the Steam library layout as we know it for it to work. It would be stupid if you got duplicate entries of games you own in different categories.

This is how it's done.

I think I'm gonna start organizing my games as well; the categories the OP posted are quite good, just need to add one: Leaderboard Games. Super Meat Boy, Audiosurf and Trials go there. They could be considered infinite, I guess, but I need to have quick access to the games I want to prove I'm better at than my friends.

#30 Posted by rjayb89 (7720 posts) -

It's "Favorites" (which usually comes with the prerequisite of being "beatean") and "Unfinished Business" which, as you might have guessed, consists of games I haven't beaten yet.

That was my only criticism when they launched the new Steam UI, no tags. But I'm ok with categories.

I'd like to see that!

I have my Favorites list, which mostly contains games I'm interested in playing right now and don't want to search for; plus nine series-based categories; one developer-based category; a category for mods; and two genre-based categories. Yeah, overlap between categories can be a problem. That's why I tend to add games to Favorites if I plan to play them.

I sort by status in the list view, which basically defaults to installed/not installed and then alphabetically.

All STEAM games. The thread is in the Steam forum, right? :P

- Currently playing
- Don't ever touch again
- Multiplayer
- Reserve
- Uninstalled

#43 Posted by Chaser324 (6408 posts) -

Categorized by genre. Any games I'm currently playing or am likely to play again I'll make a favorite. Typically keep uninstalled games filtered out.

Then the title should have said all STEAM games. Got me excited for nothing. :P
#45 Posted by JB16 (745 posts) -

Beaten: 13 games
Never Beaten: 28 games
Never Played: 32 games
Infinite: 17 games

Is it sad that my 'never beaten' and 'never played' list far surpasses my 'beaten' list?

You can add non-Steam games to your games list though, and organize them like you would with actual Steam games. So you could have all your PC games in there if you really wanted.

Awesome fucking amazing games lower shelf.
Stuff I'm playing which happens to be either crap or so amazing that I do not want to bow down and grab it on the upper shelf.

#48 Posted by ShadowKnight508 (659 posts) -

By the following groups:

  • Beaten (Games that are story-driven and that I have finished)
  • Not Beaten (Games that I am in the process of beating the story mode)
  • MAC Games (Games that are also for the Mac)
  • PC Games (Games that will only play on the PC)
  • Online Games (Games that are only online games)
