I really can't wait to play Steam games with my Mac friends, but they all own varying versions of new macs and mac books, but will they even be able to play something like L4D2? I don't really know much about macs or what their gaming capabilities are, so I was hoping someone could fill me in?

This is a really good question. I hadn't thought about this at all, just thought it was call the Mac guys are getting Steam. I wouldn't worry too much about it though. Valve wouldn't bother doing it if they weren't confident most newer Macs could run their games.

Most Macs are moderately powerful computers. You should be fine. I wish they were cheaper though...

I would say I think they can handle L4D2.   Seems like they have more core's then the DuoCores, so I would think they have good processing power...  But I don't totally know how they compare to the top of the line PC's.  But these things do have some power.  Only problem is there a bit higher price then PC's.

Games like Left 4 Dead and Team Fortress 2 can run well on even lower end PCs so it should be fine on most Macs.

Yep. I built my desktop for $600 last year, and it can run most modern games on max settings.

Don't know why you would use a Mac for gaming when you get a 4x stronger PC at the same price :/ . But anyway, Source games aren't very demanding now and older Macs or Macbooks should be able to play at medium-high settings, the newest iMacs should be able to play at high-highest settings.

Mac actually lied with the 2600 Pro, if you load up Windows from bootcamp, its actually a 2600XT with a slight downclock :D

And yes, it runs games very well.

@sodiumCyclops:  Sounds like ATI didn't have enough Pros to be able to meet Apple's needs so they offered them XTs slightly downclocked instead.  Nothing really unusual about that.  In more recent times the first batches  of i7 920 were just downclocked i7 965s.  It's all to do with offering your products to multiple pricing tiers.

My Mac plays every game I've ever tried to play on it very well. With the exception of Crysis, which works but not at high settings.

Gears of War, Halo 2, Batman Arkham Asylum and other GFWL games are the same.

Also: it's a 2 year old Macbook Pro.

I got a low-end MacBook Pro that can run GTA IV acceptably while running windows. Seeing as how that game was coded, that's saying a lot. No problems with games like COD games and such. L4D2 shouldn't be a problem, especially since the game engine is like 5-6 years old now.
