It's a great rpg with none of the console retardness such as monsters leveling with you etc. which can be found in Oblivion. Reminds me of the Gothic series for obvious reasons, which is a good thing, but with a lot less bugs (I didn't spot any bugs during my playthroughs). There's 2 paths to take in the game, they differ quite a lot so there's plenty of re-playability to be found. Took me around 45 hours to complete my first playthrough so you get plenty of entertainment for your money, unlike the overpriced call of duty series.

I really enjoyed this game as well, the ending pissed me off though, I won't go into it as it's still a very enjoyable experience despite my frustrations with the ending.

It's Gothic II in current-gen graphics. And Gothic II was amazing. The true spiritual successor to the already dead Gothic series.

The thing about the first 2 Gothic games is that the whole world feels hand placed with good detail and amazing atmosphere. The story isn't that good, but it's an entirely different experience from any "rpg" nowadays (ex. Oblivion), and I'd even go as far as saying its a better experience.

Seems like you've never played the Gothic series, seeing as how the Witcher was made in 2007 and the Gothic series, the games that Risen in a spiritual successor to, were started in 2001, so it is not like the witcher, it is like gothic.
Still recommend the all of them though.

@The_Laughing_Man:  Tried it on my old system (AMD 3200+ (2ghz single core) 2 GB RAM, 8800GTS, Windows XP) and it ran smooth as butter, obviously not with every single detail maxed but it looked very good.

Don't know, you can probably find something on youtube.  I recall someone on GB wrote a fairly decent review on it and Games Informer (yeah yeah I get it for free) wrote one that was actually fairly lengthy and I felt very fair as well.  At 50% off I may buy despite my aversion to steam, I have previously played it and felt it wasn't too shabby but was not sure about the full retail pricing.  Maybe I will see what other digital sellers are doing lots of times sales tend to be multi site...

    Thanks for the heads up.
    Seriously considering this now.
Had it recommended by an old friend whom I can usually trust when it comes to RPGs, but he's a bit more forgiving about steep learning curves than I am, so I'm still on the fence.

risen is nothing but a reskinned reworded version of a gothic sequel, its a terrible game

and the developers of gothic work towards idiots who have no idea buying their game, its just another gothic rehash, with little to no changes to the previous titles, this is the 2nd time they've renamed the title inhopes more people will buy not knowing its a gothic game

@kratier:  Uh no, the publisher JoWood owns the series and farmed out Gothic 4 to a different dev so Piranha Bytes can no longer use the name.

@HitmanAgent47: Utter nonsense: if you think scores averaged out from what passes for journalism these days is a measure of quality then you are deluded: what matters is not what some random reviewer thinks but what people who genuinely know CRPGs think, and Risen is considered one of the better CRPGs of the past couple of years.

Oh man, why 'd you link that! Now i'll have to go watch that review. I loved that game's world so much for some reason, that after having completed the game, I go and watch random videos about it. Also, the music was also pretty different and fit in really well. Great game, shouold be played by every RPG fan.
