My first blog post, on my new Giant Bomb account, celebrating my first Steam Sale.

PC games comprise the majority of my early childhood video game memories. I was adventuring as Roger Wilco and Sir Graham before playing a Mario or Link video game. After the DOS era though, I completely switched over to consoles and haven't looked back since. Until now.

Indie games, man. Nothing has interested me in PC gaming like the slew of indie games that have hit the scene in the last few years. So here it is:

Steam Holiday Sale 2012

1. X-COM: UFO Defense

I thought it was fitting that the first game I bought on Steam was one of the earliest PC games I ever played. Truly, one of the best games of all time, and a steal at $2.49.

2. Bastion

I've been wanting to play this game for a long time, and since I don't have an Xbox, I was waiting 'til I had a good TV-PC setup before I bought it. But at $3.49, why wait? And you know what? It works perfectly well on my laptop.

3. Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP

I love the look and overall vibe of the game. Other than that, and the weird tweets that it spits out, I don't know much else about it. From what I've heard though, I'm sure it's worth the $3.50.

4. Cave Story

Everything about this game seems like it's right up my alley. Unfortunately, playing it on a keyboard is no fun, and my USB SNES controller doesn't quite work with it. I'll have to wait 'til I get an Xbox controller to play it.

5. World of Goo

I was gonna buy this on the Wii Shop Channel, but it was something like $10 and I wasn't completely sold on it. For $2.49 though? Done!

The game I'm looking forward to getting the most though, is Hotline Miami. We'll see if it drops close to $5 before the sale is over. Over at GOG.com they're selling the Quest for Glory collection for $5 so I'll probably pick that up too.

What Steam games have you picked up during this year's holiday sale?

Just Hitman: Absolution and Scribblenauts Unlimited so far, haven't tried Hitman yet but Scribblenauts is disappointing, it's a good game but very much a kids game, not nearly a clever as I had hoped it would be.

I'll be buying AC3 and Little Inferno on the last day if they don't go up as dailies.

Natural Selection 2

Secrets of Monkey Island

I Am Alive

Ignite

Unmechanical

Condemned: Criminal Origins

Gateways

Already beat I Am Alive and started Unmechanical last night, I'm only about 20 minutes in though. I'm honestly surprised I bought as much as I did. Also won Mirror's Edge on SteamGifts. =D And lastly, a friend of mine sent me a gag gift of Bad Rats... He told me he'd buy me a game under $20 of my choice if I get all the achievements, I'm kind of tempted to hold him to that word but man, is that game bad...

Intrusion 2, Dishonored, and Torchlight 2. It's worth noting that I have also picked up Warhammer 40K Space Marine and Dark Souls from Amazon as well.

Looking for some more.

From Amazon:

Spec Ops

Bioshock 1 and 2

Max Payne 3

ARMA II

Cook Serve Delicious

Serious Sam 3

Sims 3 expansions

(Loading up for the new PC, been a while. NBA 2k13 and AC Rev should be on sale soon on Amazon plus some others. Still staring at $15 Dark Souls but I didn't make it that far last time)

#14 Posted by aquamarin (550 posts) - 5 months, 6 hours ago

I'm mostly sticking to my wishlist and checking in on it a few times a day, but nothing yet. I don't like spending $5 or more on stuff I don't really want to play. Thinking about Sine Mora at $3.39.

#15 Posted by Phatmac (5259 posts) - 5 months, 6 hours ago

Blocks that matter, Lone Survivor, Dear Esther, Hard Reset, and Dawn of War pack.

Amazons deal has been getting better and better too. The publishers are giving $5 coupons for any purchases in 2012. You just get 1 coupon per publisher but as is you can get some crazy deals on some of their packs now with the coupon. Looking at the EA one with Mirrors Edge, Mercs 2, Bulletstorm, Saboteur, and another game I think, which after the coupon will be $2.

Yeah, come to think of it, I have actually been getting most of my games recently from a variety of places at crazier prices than you typically see on steam sales.

Steam really pushed everyone else to get into the sale game, and it's been great for me. Amazon really has had some awesome deals.

Ah, Saints Row. I saw a couple of mentions for that one. It's so cheap right now, and I know I want to get it, but I don't think I have a PC that can run it very well. I saw it on Best Buy's flyer for $19.99 (for consoles) and I'm not sure if I want to spring for it yet.

I'm in Canada right now, so it makes me sad that I miss out on all of Amazon's deals. Hell, even on just regular prices there can be a large disparity. I remember trying to buy a PS2 game that was like $7 on amazon.com, but was close to $20 on amazon.ca. Real shame.

Fear complete package. Time to see what's so good about them.

#23 Posted by commonoutlier (136 posts) - 5 months, 6 hours ago

The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. bundle, The Walking Dead, Quantum Conundrum, Splinter Cell, Universe Sandbox, Price of Persia: Forgotten Sands, and Splinter Cell: Double Agent.  And I'm sure I'll be getting plenty more...although most of the ones I know I'll get eventually are already $2.49, so that helps a lot...

Not sure how it holds up but FEAR 1 was crazy at the time. Graphics were insane and the AI was really good.

Best part was the crazy kung fu melee moves you could pull off, the flying kick especially. Such a great touch.

#25 Posted by Ducksworth (633 posts) - 5 months, 6 hours ago

Not much. I bought Portal 1 and right now I'm looking at Commander Keen.

#26 Posted by HatKing (4413 posts) - 5 months, 6 hours ago

Keeping an eye on Hotline Miami. It's sitting at $7.50 right now, which is a good deal (hell, full price is a good deal), but I'm going to hold out for something better before I jump on it. I've made the mistake in the past of buying something that's only 25% off, then the next day it goes 75% off or something insane. If it doesn't drop any more than this, I'll happily pay the $7.50 though.

#27 Posted by amir90 (2090 posts) - 5 months, 5 hours ago

Boderlands 2, 50%

Prince of persia collection (all the games) 75%

Orcs must die 2 DLC, 75%

Arkham City GOTY 75%

Too bad I cannot play any of these games..

#28 Posted by Scottish_Sin (200 posts) - 5 months, 4 hours ago

I've bought Intrusion 2 and Gemini Rue. Holding out for a price drop on Primordia.

#29 Posted by Bismarck (366 posts) - 5 months, 4 hours ago

Blood Bowl: Legendary Edition

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War Gold edition (With Winter Assault)

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War Dark Crusade

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine DLC - Chaos Unleashed for a friend

Might get some other things till it ends

#30 Posted by TheGoatMan1 (30 posts) - 5 months, 4 hours ago

Torchlight II (loving it), Orcs Must Die 2, Ys:Origin and Dungeons of Dredmor Complete pack. Waiting for Hotline Miami to get to at least 50%.

#31 Posted by Khadyn (220 posts) - 5 months, 4 hours ago

@amir90: I really want Batman: Arkham City GOTY so badly but, I'm the weird type who has to keep the collection together (have Batman: Arkham Asylum for X360) so, may just cry and hand over the money for the X360 pricier package...

#32 Posted by dennisthemennis (416 posts) - 5 months, 4 hours ago

Nothing but I got Sleeping Dogs at greenmangaming for $11.90

#33 Posted by TheHT (8146 posts) - 5 months, 4 hours ago

FEAR 3 and Binary Domain.

Got Sleeping Dogs and Arkham City from Green Man Gaming though.

#34 Edited by Butano (1411 posts) - 5 months, 4 hours ago

Lets see...

Chivalry, Forge, Anno 2070, Alan Wake Franchise, Binary Domain, and I Am Alive.

Also picked up Guild Wars 2 for $40 off of Green Man Gaming. Just waiting for XCOM to drop a little lower than it did in the flash sale....

EDIT 1: Picked up Endless Space.

#35 Posted by Redbullet685 (5743 posts) - 5 months, 3 hours ago

I bought Don't Starve during the sale, though it wasn't part of the sale. Still, you all should go buy it.

#36 Posted by Fearbeard (582 posts) - 5 months, 3 hours ago

Just bought They Bleed Pixels and Half Minute Hero.

My backlog is way too big to justify spending more then $10 on a game, so I passed on Scribblenauts.

#37 Posted by BeachThunder (8910 posts) - 5 months, 3 hours ago

GMG have had Arkham Asylym GOTY for around £2 recently. It'd still work out to be a lot cheaper to simply buy it again than it would be to get Arkham City for the 360.

@amir90: Why not?

@HatKing: That's exactly how I feel. I'll probably wait until the 1st for that one.

Ten copies of Flora's Fruit Farm to spread Christmas cheer to all the important people in my life.

I know what cool piece of interactive entertainment all the kids REALLY want this year. ;D

#42 Edited by Artemesia (1033 posts) - 4 months, 29 days ago

Bought three friends Arkham City, one of them with Arkham Asylum, bought somebody Syndicate, bought somebody Scribblenauts Unlimited, bought my roommate Primordia and the Darksiders franchise pack(not in that order, he was upset that what I got him wasn't Primordia), bought somebody XCom: Enemy Unknown, bought somebody Sleeping Dogs and bought three people The Walking Dead. Haven't purchased myself anything yet, but I did get Rune and Thief Gold.

#43 Posted by Tesla (1525 posts) - 4 months, 29 days ago

Two copies of Hotline Miami as gifts, two copies of FTL as gifts. F.E.A.R. and Fallout Collection for myself.

The Darksiders Collection and I might get Endless Space since it's finally on sale.

#46 Posted by buft (3145 posts) - 4 months, 29 days ago

I didnt buy them but i have been gifted Bioshock 1&2 as well as Krater all in the spirit of Xmas.

#47 Posted by pyromagnestir (2925 posts) - 4 months, 29 days ago

I have bought nothing. NOTHING!

Well, except a gift copy of Orcs Must Die 2.

And that amazon bundle with Spec Ops and the Bioshocks.

But other than that I have bought nothing!

I'm waiting to see if To the Moon is a flash deal or daily deal and that is the last thing I'm going to get. After that I'm done.

Half Life 2 and episodes 1&2, because for some reason I didn't have them.

I bought Scribblenauts for $4.50 from Amazon though, $7.50 before a credit.

@HatKing: That's exactly how I feel. I'll probably wait until the 1st for that one.

Thursday last week, my CPU got a bit hot. After some attempts to apply new thermal paste properly and the heatsink (which I am still unsuccessful at), I am still having problems with CPU temps when playing games. My friend will come over this weekend and try to fix it, even letting me have his superior heatsink/fan. So I am crossing my fingers that I didn't ruin my CPU.
