Steam killing my Internet connection?

#1 Posted by stryker1121 (1586 posts) -

Downloaded Steam tonight and have been having issues opening up some pages (I use Chrome) and playing videos. The connection is all together very slow otherwise. I uninstalled and that did not fix the issue. I reinstalled and things are a bit better but still having some of the issues mentioned above. IIs Steam using all my bandwidth? Is there a fix for this? Thanks, all.

It's probably not Steam. You should shut your computers down, power cycle your modem and router, and then start everything back up again.

If it was downloading games, then yes it was using some of your bandwidth, otherwise it doesn't use anything noticeable bandwidth or system resource wise.

I suggest pausing your porn torrents.

I am not computer savvy (obviously). How do I power cycle my modem and router?

@stryker1121: Turn them off for a few minutes. First turn on your modem, let it start up for a couple of minutes and get a connection, then power on your router if you have one.

@MB: That seemed to do it. Thanks much!

@stryker1121: Also worth knowing that when Steam is downloading anything, including game updates that you didn't actively start yourself, it tends to chew up all of your bandwidth. I remember i couldn't do anything with the internet when Max Payne 3's whopping 30 gig download was going through.

It's been suggested to Steam that they add the ability for users to throttle downloads but until then you'd have to use something like NetLimiter if you want the throttle the allocated bandwidth yourself.
