The Mega Steam End o' Year Sale Discussion Thread!

I think I've finally hit that point. I own everything I'd want on Steam. Actually playing those games is an entirely different tale though.

I hit that point a while ago. Now I just get games when there's a sale because it feels like I'm missing out if I don't at the price they're going for. Steam's got me by the balls.

Holy crap thats a lot of THQ for £20!

Picked up the Crusader Kings 2 DLC for a steal cus i haz to have more faces and shield heraldry

#153 Posted by believer258 (8170 posts) - 5 months, 29 days ago

So there's one on sale called "Intrusion 2" for like three bucks. I think I'm going to get it because, well, I'll let it speak for itself:

Also, I've never really played an MMO and want to at least try one - how is The Secret World?

#154 Posted by crusader8463 (13171 posts) - 5 months, 29 days ago

I broke down and bought Prince of Persia pack. It's a series I always wanted to try but never got around to, and I have been eyeing that dam bundle for years now during these sales and I just never bit the bullet on it. Like others I'm at the point where I got pretty much everything I want on Steam so I'm just keeping an eye out for stuff like this to mop up on.

#155 Posted by Mr_Misery (139 posts) - 5 months, 29 days ago

Is the highest a game will be discounted 75%? I see Skyrim is $20 off, is there a chance it will be cheaper later? Is DLC ever a daily/flash deal?

#156 Edited by Sanity (1540 posts) - 5 months, 29 days ago

Not a ton i want this time around, might pick up world in conflict just to have it on my steam libary, and will grab the walking dead when it goes on sale. Im finding that once you already have a billion games from the previous 5 sales you haven't played these sales are less enticing. Im hoping the command and conquer pack goes up for cheap on origin as i want to replay a few of those but not gonna get my hopes up.

#157 Edited by SuperWristBands (2059 posts) - 5 months, 29 days ago

@Mr_Misery: Skyrim may go down further if it isn't 75% already (once it goes to Daily/Flash, pretty sure that is as cheap as it'll get though) and DLC is sometimes part of daily/flash deals (Batman AC has it's DLC on sale in the current flash sale).

#158 Posted by jdh5153 (864 posts) - 5 months, 29 days ago

Kind of depressed with today's selection. Nothing worth buying...

#159 Posted by GetEveryone (4448 posts) - 5 months, 29 days ago

So I got Mirror's Edge and NBA 2K13 as I've been holding out on them for a while (years in the case of the former), and Sine Mora because it was ridiculously cheap and I had it on my wishlist for some reason.

Going to try and hold out from buying anything else. I may get Sleeping Dogs if it gets highly discounted at some point, but otherwise...

#160 Edited by CornBREDX (3465 posts) - 5 months, 29 days ago

Hard reset, Edna and Harvey, and Cryostasis are all under 5$ right now. I got them

#161 Edited by Rhaknar (5815 posts) - 5 months, 29 days ago

only 3 games on my wishlist were 75% off (for the duration of the sale that is), BY FAR the lowest ive ever had (those are the games I usually either buy day 1, or on the last day since they wont be lower). Can safely say this will be the sale I buy the least games (doesnt help that I already have...alot). Might bite on Hitman, only 50% off but I was just watching the QL yesterday in fact and it looks awesome (Im not a Hitman purist so I dont give 2 fucks about how it "tarnishes the franchise" or whatever), probably looks amazing on PC too.

So, damage today is Rocketbirds, Mutant Blob (double-dip, have it on Vita) and Edna & Harvey, with Hitman tickling my trigger finger...

wiat for the daily deals... >_>

edit: also the THQ pack for 25 euros (or dollars whatever) is a RIDICULOUS value, too bad I have most of it.

#162 Posted by thebeastwithtwobacks (120 posts) - 5 months, 29 days ago

that THQ bundle is indeed an insanely good deal.

#163 Posted by Rhaknar (5815 posts) - 5 months, 29 days ago

seems people in europe buying Scribblenauts Unlimited (which only comes out here officially in february) can actually play it now, even tho its just a pre-order for us... hmm probably a bug, and I cant confirm if it even works myself, but still, wasnt there some fellow European earlier that wanted it?

Oh, don't worry, I bought it from GMG for £17.50 - it's currently £24.99 on Steam and I can't see it dropping much further than that. If it does I'll be disappointed, but I got it for a decent price, regardless.

#165 Posted by LordAndrew (13849 posts) - 5 months, 29 days ago

I only have about three THQ games on Steam. I'd better fix that.

#166 Posted by LordAndrew (13849 posts) - 5 months, 29 days ago

Looks like the THQ pack is missing Red Faction Guerilla, Warhammer 40K Dawn of War and its expansions. DLC for included games is also absent, but that doesn't surprise me.

Anything else missing from the THQ pack?

#167 Posted by Bourbon_Warrior (4524 posts) - 5 months, 29 days ago

Fable 3 any good?

Like at all? Been a severe lack of RPG's this year and feel like playing one any recomendations from the sales.

#171 Posted by newhaap (331 posts) - 5 months, 29 days ago

@Bourbon_Warrior: Oh right, I forgot this is within the context of the sale. I did finish it, so it's not so bad as to become unbearable, but I don't think there's anything remarkable about it besides the entertaining voice acting. Fable 2 never came out on PC so I never really got immersed in the Fable world, but if you like that setting I think it makes the game much more enjoyable.

With the sale though I think it's worth a purchase.

#172 Posted by Chrjz (241 posts) - 5 months, 29 days ago

@Bourbon_Warrior: Fable 3 is barely an RPG. If you want some awesome RPG games for cheap, check out the GOG.com sale currently going on.

#173 Posted by SuperWristBands (2059 posts) - 5 months, 29 days ago

@Bourbon_Warrior: Fable 3 is okay. I had a fine time with it.

#174 Posted by pyromagnestir (3025 posts) - 5 months, 29 days ago

So doesn't look like they're doing an achievement thing like last year with the coupons and the free games and all that, and I think that's a shame. Unless it is there and I'm missing it or something. I really liked it.

people abused the coal system, dont expect to get freebies anytime soon, if ever again.

It's not Fable 2, but I enjoyed most of it, the atmosphere is pretty good.

#178 Edited by pyromagnestir (3025 posts) - 5 months, 29 days ago

@Rhaknar:

People suck!

But even without the chance for free games part, I liked picking up a new game (or in some cases, games I already had) and trying it out for a while to get the holiday sale achievement. Although fuck that Meatboy one. Fuck it to hell.

#179 Posted by Chrjz (241 posts) - 5 months, 29 days ago

If Fable III was $5 or $2.50 I wouldn't say no to buying it but $12.50 is still too much. The sanctuary was one of the most poorly implemented mechanics I've ever seen.

That was me! (Sweden)

Still, wouldn't want to pony out 18,75€ for something that wouldn't work for another three months...will investigate some more, cheers for the info!

I hope Steam brings the deals this year; ever since last December, Amazon has been consistently kicking Steam's ass and the way Amazon is set up, it's somewhat irritating to buy from them if you are outside the USA.

Not too many games left for me to buy, but I'm on the lookout for a good deal on Hitman: Absolution and Assassin's Creed III.

Hitman: Absolution is on sale for $25 right now on Steam....

...but you can get a Steam code at Amazon for $20 right now.

#182 Posted by Kidavenger (2349 posts) - 5 months, 29 days ago

@jakob187: Exactly what I'm talking about Amazon eating Steam's lunch, I don't understand how Amazon is consistently undercutting Steam on pretty much everything now....

#183 Posted by jakob187 (20760 posts) - 5 months, 29 days ago

@Kidavenger: Probably in the same way that GMG undercuts Steam - they pick up Steam codes on the dirt cheaps and/or with coupons, then hold them until the shit needs to be cheaper. It's one of the reasons you've started seeing some of the games, such as Darksiders II sold through Amazon, having an actual Amazon downloader with them to download the game through their servers rather than just inserting a key into Steam for the download. They are trying to stop that practice in general.

Regardless, I'm kind of pissed that Hitman was $30 last week and my buddy bought it for me for Christmas. Wish he could've saved some extra money on it. Nonetheless, the game is fun.

As for me, I'm looking for Dishonored, XCOM, and AC3 more than anything on the dirt cheaps - like, $25 a pop and I'll pick them up. As it stands, PC gaming has become so damn cheap that there's just no reason to not hold out for sales at this point.

I also wouldn't mind picking up Deus Ex: Human Revolution. That's more likely to happen than everything else.

Even then, I also need to pick up some games as gifts for people.

Fuck, my wallet already hurts...and there's still the goddamn GOG sale also.

Can someone explain to me why Red Faction Guerrilla isn't on Steam anymore? All the other RF games are still there. It kinda sucks because I was gonna buy it from this sale too.

#185 Posted by Cincaid (2899 posts) - 5 months, 29 days ago

Arkham City looks fucking amazing on my computer, but now I feel like I have to run out tomorrow and buy a wired 360 controller for 30€, since I was stupid to think my plug-and-charge ones to my console would somehow work on my PC. :(

#186 Edited by TheHT (8422 posts) - 5 months, 29 days ago

Despite playing the entire Sands trilogy on PC, I just can't bring myself to get the re-reboot Prince of Persia on the PC, knowing that we'll never get the true ending DLC.

THQ collection is nuuuuuuuuuuuuuttts.

I double dipped; $2.50 is super cheap for what I thought to be a really fun game. What true ending DLC are you talking about?

#188 Posted by thebunnyhunter (772 posts) - 5 months, 29 days ago

I feel compelled to buy the THQ collection, my pc is crap and probably cant reasonably play half of them BUTTTTTTTT its a fucking steal......how can i just pass up an opportunity like this? If i do im loosing money in the long run. Ill just pull the damn trigger and get it over with. Damn the steam sale for claiming another victim

Don't believe Guerilla was part of the HIB. It is part of the Amazon "THQ Tantalizing Medley" bundle though for $7.49 USD.

Just get a USB dongle instead. The one on Amazon is apparently a Chinese knock-off, but the reviews have said that it works flawlessly after a bit of software tweaking.

It's called the Epilogue and took place after the end of the game which itself ended in a cliffhanger and judging by the state of things, a sequel to it seems unlikely. A kick in the head, n'est pas?

Anyway, I'm gonna totally cave and get FTL and the soundtrack one day

I never played the Epilogue DLC so maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see how the original ending is not satisfying on its own.

The story comes to a complete circle. You meet the Princess and the King, who sacrificed his kingdom through a seemingly selfish desire to save his daughter. As the outsider looking in, the initial perspective is that the King fucked up. One woman (albeit your daughter) versus the entire kingdom? Yea, you let your daughter die. You then go throughout the entire game with the Princess fixing the consequences wrought by the King's decision. As the game progresses, you create a stronger bond with the princess. That decision to sacrifice her in order to save everyone else doesn't become quite so easy. The game then ends with the Prince given the same choice. Save the Princess or save the kingdom. Unlike before, you now have full grasp of each choice and its consequence. You spent the entire game seeing what the kingdom is like under the control of evil forces, but you also spent the entire time garnering a relationship with the Princess. The game ends with you choosing the Princess, and at that point you understand the reasoning of the King.

[edit] Without spoiling anything, I'd say that the original game without the DLC is definitely "a full story."

Debating on Borderlands 2. Anyone know how the PC version is? I recall hearing that Borderlands 1 was not great on the PC. Was all that stuff fixed for 2?

#199 Edited by Capum15 (3821 posts) - 5 months, 29 days ago
@Church069: PC version is pretty damn awesome.

Edit: To clarify, the menus seemed to work just fine for me and a friend when we played through it. I think that was the biggest complaint in the PC version of 1, and while I was fine with it, it's definitely better in 2.
#200 Edited by DarkShaper (1166 posts) - 5 months, 29 days ago
@Church069: As someone that played through the Borderlands 1 twice + DLC I feel confident saying that BL2 got a much better port.
