The reviews are in for Steel Battalion. 1/10 and 3/10. Nice.

How the hell can they release a game that doesn't even work properly?

#3 Posted by believer258 (11642 posts) -

Ouch. I thought this might actually be the thing that makes Kinect look OK or a little bit worthwhile, but I guess not.

#4 Posted by Metzo_Paino (318 posts) -

NOOOOOO! :(

I loved the original Steel Battalion, and was really hoping that this would be ok.

#5 Posted by TruthTellah (8549 posts) -

Ouch. Those are rough. Though, I suppose they're reasonable for a busted game.

The developer should be ashamed of themselves for releasing a broken game. A game that might get fixed with patches in the first week is one thing, but releasing a game that will probably -never- be working properly? That's just sad.

Gamesradar gave them a 3. I kind of want to play this now, just to know

#7 Posted by JasonR86 (9609 posts) -

That's too bad. It seemed like a neat idea.

#8 Posted by UltorOscariot (171 posts) -

Destructoid also gave it a 3. It's a game built to leverage tech that isn't ready for prime time. Why should we have expected anything different?

#9 Posted by jerseyscum (862 posts) -

Yup. It sucked. Why an I not surprised?

#10 Posted by tourgen (4427 posts) -

Well that sucks. It's too bad they couldn't get it to come together. I wonder how hard kinect gets pushed on the new console.

#11 Posted by Euphorio (77 posts) -

yeah I think it's partly the Kinect and partly the game. Sometimes, that thing just doesn't sense properly, or senses your movement too much. But it also lays on the developers...as if they didn't test it to see if it worked...it's just too busted.

#12 Posted by Milkman (16532 posts) -

Sounds like a winner.

#13 Posted by NegativeCero (2976 posts) -

Not surprising really. This makes me look forward to the quick look more.

#14 Posted by BeachThunder (11702 posts) -

I want to see Big Rigs remade with Kinect support.

#15 Posted by sungahymn (986 posts) -

"That game is gonna be so f-ing burly!" - Ryan Davis, in one of the Bombcasts.

So much for the crew's excitement.

#16 Posted by Korolev (1700 posts) -

Kinect is alright for relatively simple motions. Once you need to do complex motions rapidly, it starts to fail. Kinect still isn't built for precision.

This type of game should have waited for the next generation of kinect or motion sensor to come out. This game just looks painful and annoying to play. Fromsoftware obviously tried and put effort into this game, but I think they expected more than the kinect could deliver. Which is still their fault at the end of the day - they should have tested the kinect and built the game around what the kinect could reliably do, and not what they wished it could reliably do.

#17 Posted by TheSouthernDandy (3787 posts) -

I actually thought the demo worked pretty well. Maybe it doesnt hold up over the course of the game. What a bummer.

#18 Posted by WMWA (1160 posts) -

This actually bums me out. It's a shame that the coolest concept conceived for kinext is physically impossible to make a reality. Fuck you, everyone who bought a kinect. Don't buy them next time and make MS do their job with the tech

#19 Posted by Twinsun (468 posts) -

Quite a surprise coming from how the guys raved about it, but I guess that's per usual with previews these days.

#20 Edited by Nekroskop (2786 posts) -

Yuck, not that Angry Joe guy again...

It is sad seeing the last great hope for Kinect being that broken though. I'm glad I skipped out on the hardware this time.

Because it's a Kinect game, of course.

#22 Posted by JeanLuc (3572 posts) -

That's really disappointing. This was one of the games that made me want to buy a Kinect. I guess I'll just keep waiting.

Apparently Kinect is absolutely busted to the point where you will be lucky to be able to finish the game. I guess it was a good idea gone terribly wrong.

And this is why. LOL it's so broken.

I watched Angry Joe's Demo check in. Month or so ago. I had played the Demo myself. only the training. So When I say this I said "Joes just playing it wrong! must be his set up....Know what..ill try it myself now." Did so...EXACTLY the same stuff happened to me, completely pissed me off. No improvement on release.....so sad.

#24 Posted by Crixaliz (782 posts) -

I guess I won't need to buy a Kinect then.

#25 Posted by EXTomar (4500 posts) -

The GB Quick Look isn't kind either.

#26 Posted by iAmJohn (6109 posts) -

Not like this.

#27 Edited by Cloudenvy (5891 posts) -

This is pretty much what I expected to be honest.

#28 Posted by nintendoeats (5975 posts) -

I never get excited for games.

And this is what happens when I do.

Great.

Screw you Kinect.

I'm not surprised.

I love the Gamespot quote on the back of the box, it really shows just how much Gamespot changed and would never accept money to pretend that an awful game is good.

#31 Posted by Danteveli (1162 posts) -

You realize that critics do not get paid for having their quotes used? Even the giantbomb guys have admitted to stuff they say in public form being used on ads or w.e, hell ryan said he had a quote about DK for the wii end up in a manual.

Its pretty clear that the quote came from the preview event, where patrick and them seemed super psyched.

Dont be such a jerk.

#33 Posted by Alkaiser (358 posts) -

Well, there goes my reason for buying a kinect. Time to shell out crazy money for that Steel Battalion case. I didn't need that extra kidney anyways. Just slowing me down.

Than they should petition to remove there quote from that box, I can’t be the only one who thinks that they get paid for that.

Kinect continuing to be the biggest con in gaming. Who needs functionality when you have marketing eh?

lmao what would that get them? a negative relationship with a developer/publisher and a bunch of drama on the internet? Gee, good work fellas.

You seem very naive.

#38 Posted by Robo (774 posts) -

Kinect has never been capable of reliably tracking slightly more subtle or complex motions. Just big, obvious ones. Then even that is iffy.
I don't know why Steel Battalion's devs expected anything else and bet so much on it.

Game of the year. /sarcasm

#40 Posted by Hizang (8533 posts) -

Oh man, I remember the staff being really into this game ages ago.

It certainly does look like the Gods and Generals of this generation; maybe a close second to Darkest of Days.

(Actually, that's not fair. The game looks kind of rad; it's the controls which apparently fail, but at least it's not irredeemable on all levels).

#42 Posted by EquitasInvictus (2004 posts) -

I haven't really seen anything of this game until the quick look but it's a huge shame how it actually played -- I can definitely see the potential and why the staff would have been interested in this before its actual release. Kinect controls were probably not the best approach for this.

This kind of makes me itch for a really good tank crew simulator more than anything, actually.

#43 Posted by MildMolasses (3213 posts) -

I'm wondering what was so different about the preview events that made the guys so hyped up about this versus the final release? Although I did see a tweet from Mike McWherter (at least I think it was him)  this morning that said it was busted back then. I wonder what cause that disparity of preview impressions?

Nevertheless, its super disappointing to see how broken it is

#44 Posted by EXTomar (4500 posts) -

The issue isn't necessarily Kinect although that is a factor. The game appears to be simply punishing and unfun to play where Kinect appears to just add to the punishing and unfuness.

#48 Posted by eroticfishcake (7782 posts) -

I guess a busted game shipped with Kinect controls was bound to be a disaster which is a shame since conceptually it seems like a great idea. As if more proof was needed to show that the Kinect just isn't suited for complex actions.

#49 Posted by Subjugation (4718 posts) -

Wow, that is seriously broken. The thing was jumping back and forth while he was sitting stationary on his couch. I don't understand how you can ship a game when it performs like this, even with publisher pressure.
