Stone Cold Steve Austin rose to fame in the World Wrestling Federation {see WWE} in the late 90s popularizing the company around the world. Building on the legacy left by legends such as Hollywood Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage, Stone Cold brought about a new age of prosperity for the WWF. His ‘Austin 3:16’ promo in which he mocked the bible and Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts made Austin notorious amongst fans prompting massive merchandise sales with his quotation. Whilst he wasn’t immediately popular his loud mouth distinguished himself resulting in the WWF giving Austin the spotlight.Austin eventually wrestled the famous wrestler Bret Hart after antagonising him for several months previous. The match between Bret and Austin took place at Wrestlemania 13 ending in Stone Cold passing out in Bret’s finisher manoeuvre; the Sharpshooter. Although Bret technically won the match Austin did not submit, when stumbling back to the locker room, without help, Austin received a round of applause from the fans showing their respect for the spectacle they had just witnessed. Following the memorable match at Wrestlemania 13 Austin began being cheered by crowds worldwide.Wrestlemania 14 gained an enormous amount of hype from the American media due in part to the boxer Mike Tyson. Tyson was to help promote the WWF by being involved in the Main Event at Wrestlemania; Shawn Michaels, then WWF champion, Vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin. During the main event match Tyson acted as a substitute for the referee asserting Austin to be the victor. Celebrating with his newly won WWF Championship, Austin shook hands with Tyson, burying the hatchet.Following wrestling in another Main Event at Wrestlemania (15) Austin received surgery on his badly damaged Neck. Healing his wounds Austin took a year out of the WWF, during this period the WWF heavily promoted the Rock who would ultimately become a pop culture icon. The Rock won the WWF Championship in February 2001 for a sixth time at No Way Out defeating Kurt Angle. Austin returned to the ring in late 2000 and won the right to fight the Rock at Wrestlemania 17. Wrestlemania 17 marked a rare occasion were a Babyface {good guy} sparred with another babyface forcing a divide between the audience. During the match Vince McMahon, Austin’s nemesis and owner of the company, sided with Austin helping him to defeat the Rock. WWF’s decision to make Austin a heel {villain} was an attempt to freshen the character although this backfired as the crowd still cheered Austin or lost interest.Austin then led the new alliance to batle with the WWF to take total control of the wrestling industry. During the main event at invasion Austin turned his back against WWF and joined Shane, Stephanie and Paul Heyman. Austin during this time was the WWF champion and kept the alliance together during this battle. At survivor series in the win all match Kurt Angle who was already eliminated came out and attacked Austin turning his back against the alliance, this led to The Rock hitting the Rock bottom on Austin to win the match for the WWF. The aftermath for Stone cold was he kept his WWF title and would lose to Chris Jericho who got help from Booker T. Austin and Booker T would fight it out in a supermarket and go through church resulting in Austin beating Booker T. Stone cold would then battle the arrival of the NWO with the help from The Rock as Scott Hall injured Austin with a concrete block to the knee.

Currently Austin is semi-retired often returning to the WWF, now WWE, to play a character or promote a movie produced by the WWE. Austin personally has starred in two movies with a third in production. Before Wrestlemania XXV on April 4th 2009 Austin will be inducted to the WWE’s Hall of Fame, Vince McMahon inducted Austin into the hall of fame.

In 2007, he legally changed his name from "Steven Williams" to "Steve Austin".
