Street Fighter Alpha 3, also know as Street Fighter Zero 3, is the third game in the Street Fighter Alpha series. The game had three selectable fighting styles and numerous home releases that brought new features to fans of the arcade version.

Overview

"Street Fighter Alpha 3" continued Capcom's traditional 2-D fighting game style but added a few more options to players over it's predecessor. The game was still played using three kicks and three punches of varying strength and a joystick for movement and blocking. By pressing certain combinations of attack buttons and moving the joystick special and super moves could be performed. The game also included some basic recovery moves and some counters performed by quick button presses at correct intervals. Street Fighter Alpha 3 introduced multiple fighting styles for the player to choose from named A-ism, V-ism", and X-ism. The style that the player chose would alter what super moves a character could use, what special actions a character could perform, and in some cases which attacks the characters had available.

Fighting Styles

A-ism:

A-ism is similar to the fighting style seen in "Street Fighter Alpha". With this set-up a character was given a green super bar with 3 levels, when a player performed a super move a section of the bar would be drained equal to the strength of the button used to perform the super move. For example, if a player entered a super move using a light attack button, one level of the super gauge would disappear, but if the player used a heavy attack button all 3 levels of the bar would deplete. The amount of damage corresponded to how much of the super bar was depleted to use it. A-ism also allowed the player to block in the air and perform tactical moves, such as alpha counters.

V-ism:

V-ism is similar to the fighting style seen in "Street Fighter Alpha 2". The player was given a blue super bar with a dividing middle line and a percent level. When the player pressed 2 attack buttons of the same level, i.e light kick and light punch, for a short time the character would enter a custom combo mode where normal and special moves linked together easily and allowed the player to explore new ways of juggling opponents. The strengths of the attack buttons pressed changed the pace at which moves would follow each other in custom combo mode, light buttons made moves repeat quickly, medium buttons made moves a little faster, and two hard buttons made the moves follow each other at a slower pace. If a character was interrupted during a custom combo they would loose 50% of their super bar shortening the amount of time they could perform a combo by half. The V-ism can be used with some character to set up infinite combo loops creating anger among some arcade players.

X-ism:

X-ism is similar to the fighting style seen in "Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo". By using this -ism and  player received a red super bar with no break and no levels. The player also only received one super move rather than the multiple offered to A-ism. the player also lost the ability to perform Alpha Counters and to block in the air. To make up for these losses the character was given increased strength when played in this mode, and the super moves carried so much punch that some players gladly gave up some of their characters defensive abilities.

Port Only Game Modes

World Tour :

In world tour mode a player chooses a fighter and then levels the fighter up by winning stages set in different countries around a virtual map. Each spot on the map had different rules and different opponents for the player to overcome. After completing a stage a character earns experience points based on how well they performed in the stage. For instance, if a character were to perfect a fight he would gain more experience than if they ended the round with a sliver of health left. The character advances in level in two separate areas their overall level and their level in a specific "-ism". Every few levels a character receives bonus skills that allow for super meter regeneration or other nice additions. Depending on which of the three "-isms" the character had equipped they would gain different skills that would help boost their selected fighting style. A character would also gain points that could be applied to raise offensive power or defensive power, however for every point added there would be a point  removed from the opposite stat. Advancing to the end of world tour mode would unlock Guile, Evil Ryu, and Shin Akuma as playable characters.
