An Option Select is a joystick or button input which functions as multiple possible actions simultaneously, letting the game engine decide the best counter to a situation. Specific instances allow only certain moves to come out, so you can worry less about your opponents options, and focus more on your own offense.

In my second 3-minute fundamental tutorial (I know it's closers to 4 minutes, I really made it as short and concise as possible) I cover option selects in a general way that you can apply to any character. I go over the main archetypes of OP/SEL, such as Crouch Teching, Meaties (ground & air), and Buffering (ground & air).  Really busted my ass on the editing for this one, feedback is appreciated! Enjoy. 3-Minute Fundamentals Playlist.

edit: Score another for Event Hubs, and my first iplaywinner plug! yeaaahhhh boiiiiii.

This was excellent!

I recently started being aware enough to use crouch teching...it's one of the many awesome tools you talk about in your video. Having it all in a nice format saves the time of scouring forums and reading into the technical crap you sometimes find on SRK.

Keep it up, homie

I've read a lot about option selects but never quite understood it until now. Thanks for demonstrating it!

No problem, glad you enjoyed it.

I give you a virtual High-Five for this video sir. I'm not quite at the level where I can actually use these techniques (I'm still struggling to get combos down on an Xbox controller), but when or if I eventually get to that level it will be a nice frame of reference.

Nice work as usual. I kind of wish option selects didn't exist though, people should make their own guesses and decisions. I know option selects aren't perfect and they only cover a number of options, but they're still annoying to deal with, especially shotos with jump in option selects.

In case anyone's wondering there's a a few videos demonstrating these for a lot of characters on youtube.

So what part of meaties are option selects? From what i understand meaties are attacks that you use on a knocked down opponent, so that the frame that he wakes up, your attack hits on the very last active frame right? This way he is forced to block or try a reversal.

I enjoy option selects, although they're pretty tough to implement successfully into your game. Since my whole game plan is to guess as little as possible, and to limit my opponents options so I have to think about less, they're perfect for me.

I know of many option select vids, I'll be linking them in the OP and the youtube info a bit later. Kinda sick of Op/sel at this moment, ha.

Yeah, they wake up into your attack, and since your attack is hitting later you recover quicker, allowing you to block. That in itself is an option select. You can do a meaty crouching jab which will hit if they do nothing, and you also block automatically if they perform a reversal. There's two options right there. And of course you can do multiple jabs, and block will take priority over that. From multiple jabs that's enough time to hit-confirm into a big combo. That's just the basic meaty, there are other meaty options such as safe jump setups and opsel sweep (as I explained in the video).

If you post these on SRK you could probably get on the front page. It's user nominated now I think.

What's the next topic gonna be? plinking? punishing? antiair?

Correction: good work London, Ontario. I understand what this guy is saying, but he makes it sound like any technical knowledge is useless. Hell, this tutorial told me that this shit exists period, and that alone is incredibly valuable.
#41 Posted by lordofultima (6183 posts) -
@AniMoney:  I'm perfectly willing to go a set with the guy even if I lose miserably, but he's not even up for that. It's just mad ignorant to be talking ish about someone you know nothing about. Making a point to not give those people the time or effort anymore.
#42 Posted by Scooper (7882 posts) -

Wow. Just read all that shit and Mihai, no matter how long he's been in the 'scene' or whatever is a nasty fucker and pretty ignorant or in denial saying that no one who's top tourney level uses this "fancy shit" when it's blatentaly obvious they do all the time. He keeps going on about how it's all about fundamentals and the top level players have both their fundamentals and "fancy shit" locked down. I think he holds himself in higher regard then he actualy is. It's like someone's told him for the first time what these things mean and he's like "Oh yeah!? Yeah! That shit. I don't use any of that. I mean what use is any of it" to cover up.

#43 Posted by Stang (4726 posts) -

Tell that tool to lick your balls. Even acknowledging him with that is giving him too much attention. SRK, home of the 3 inch peen asshats.
