How about some feel good news?

Capcom Japan today revealed that a whole bunch of you helped the company raise roughly $500,000 to donate towards the earthquake and tsunami relief efforts ongoing in Japan.

Back in March, Capcom put the pretty decent Street Fighter IV for iPhone on sale for $1 for a week, with all money collected becoming aid for Japan. The results of those sales were released by Capcom today, totaling about $500,000.

"Capcom hopes that these donations may contribute to help provide the greatest possible amount of assistance to the earthquake victims," the company said, while announcing the impressive numbers. "Furthermore, we wish the restoration activities in the damaged areas progress as quickly as possible."

Capcom will also be donating another one million dollars towards the same cause.

Yeah I feel like the news stations haven't been covering it as much as they should.

500,000 people bought an iPhone game for charity's sake? That's a lot of touching gestures.

No, and they won't unless like all of the plants explode in unison or something. Mainstream media is like a kid with ADD; the second something else comes along, they lose all interest in the thing they were covering and put all their attention to the new thing. It's sad, ESPECIALLY when stuff like this happens, but that's the way they roll.

When I saw the title i thought the donations were regarding them losing money because of PSN.

Now if they sold the PSN/360 costume bundles for $1, they'd make much, much more.

This sort of thing is such a good idea. So many benefits.

Gives to charity which makes the customer happier and the company seem nicer, plus, of course going towards people in need.

Being a digital download the overheads are much lower than what giving away physical products would be.

As a result I'm happier spending my money on Capcom products and this might be one of the best ways of donating. It can rely on consumer greed (not as mean as it sounds) and give them something they might want in exchange for a small sum, and give that to those who need it.

I've donated about the same through bought products as I have to Red Cross for this earthquake, anyone who's considered donating, you don't have to give much but just because the news is dying down doesn't mean Japan has been rebuilt.

Love this story. Gives that warm fuzzy feeling when gaming can make some sort of contribution for charity.

Capcom complains about lost revenue due to psn being down, but donates a million dollars.

I know a million isn't much of hurt for a large company, but it seems like they could have just kept their mouth shut instead of being all

"PSN downtime hurts so much, we might not pull through"

Don't get me wrong though, love capcom and good for them.

Well, that PSN thing they did ended up raising one mirrion dorrars.

They should start doing that; releasing items for download with all proceeds going to Japan.

It's good to see Japan getting more support, anyway. Especially since I haven't heard anything since like two weeks after the incident.

More publishers should do stuff like this. I remember Sony - before those dumb bitch hackers got their hands on it, anyway - had those PSN themes where, if you bought it (for $2, $5, $10, or more - you pick what you pay), all the money would go to Red Cross relief. I bought a couple of those. It felt good. Way more opportunities should present themselves like this for gamers to help.
