Are the Sony exclusive characters going to be tournament banned?

#1 Posted by DarthOrange (3858 posts) -

Any official word on whether some (or all) of the exclusive characters going to be banned at the major tournaments (Evo, So-Cal, etc)?

#2 Posted by CounterShock (420 posts) -

Don't they usually? I don't know why they just don't use the versions of the game with more characters.

Console specific characters are almost always banned. This was the case with Kratos in MK9 and Yoda and Vader in Soul Calibur 4 (until they became DLC).

Platform exclusive characters are always banned for major tournaments. As some people will not being playing on that system, it does not make it fair to expect them to know those match-ups and so on. They will be treated like Kratos in MK.

That's just dumb. If you're a tournament-level player, then it's not asking too much of you to own multiple consoles. That's why they have sponsors and shit.

Ugh... can you imagine Cole being used to win a fighting game tournament?

That just seems gross to me for some reason.

wow FIVE characters banned out the gate, that blows.

Not every tournament player is sponsored and/or wins every tournament they go to.

Either way, it's not that much to ask of them, if they are serious about being tournament players. Consoles are cheap nowadays!

Haha. No the average tourney player doesn't have a sponsor. Even one that does moderately well and usually places highly in their region isn't sponsored.

And while you're simply thinking of the player...you should expand your thought process a little bit.

Some tournaments play on 360s and others on PS3s. It's just an investment that a certain venue/organization decides on which console will be their main and it will get incredibly convoluted when you have console specific characters on certain tournaments but not in others. Especially when you consider that EVO points are being earned at most of these to determine placing everything has to be kosher across the board.

@Enigma777: oh yeah, just pay 200 bucks for another console, another 60 for the game and then 160 on top of that for their sticks. I'm sure the thousands of people who go to tournaments can afford that easily.

I think it's up to the community, in this case they most likely will. I think BB on the PS3 had a (some?) DLC character(s) that was(were) yet to be released on Xbox but wasn't(weren't) banned. But that was probably because the Xbox was getting the DLC later on.

It's very likely they'll be banned in the tourney scene, even though Evo uses PS3 setups the Xbox 360 is way more popular among the players, it's very, very rare to find any of the top players playing the PS3 version online, it's always the 360 version. Daigo, Tokido, Mago and many European/USA players all play on 360. A lot of people would have to buy a new console to get used to these characters.

Kind of surprising given how unpopular the 360 is in Japan, but all the well known players there play online on that instead. Then again the online is more stable and connects faster and more reliably on 360. (for SFIV it sure is)

Where do they use the 360 more? Most people practice on both equally, at least here at UCI, and anybody who is serious about fighting games doesn't put any serious time into online play as lag will always be a factor and when your counting pixels it throws off your whole game.

Yes.

Of course they will be banned.

In Street Fighter X Tekken's case, it's the most fucked as it has too many guest due to Capcom's greed.

A roster is like cake, and it got mixed with pie, BAD COMBINATION.

@DarthOrange: Who counts pixels?

#19 Posted by FLStyle (4665 posts) -

Universal access and a fair playing field for the players will always take precedence.

#20 Posted by BabyChooChoo (4395 posts) -

Everyone should be banned until Capcom gets their shit together and adds Elena and Eddie/Christie.

#21 Posted by DarthOrange (3858 posts) -

@TechHits: Frames. Whatever, same difference.

In Japan online is used often due to the combination of a pretty small landmass and god like connections.

Daigo, Tokido, Mago, Kindevu and many more play online and quite regularly. Online is a very worthwhile experience for anybody wanting to improve or learn match ups.

and I already said where they use the 360 version more: online.

The PS3 version is only favoured at Evo/tournaments because of controller compatibility and no having to sign into stupid profiles when you plug in controllers.

@DarthOrange: I would say almost all top players prefer the 360 version of Capcom games to the PS3 version. It started with there being input lag in Street Fighter on the PS3 and in Marvel PS3 version drops more frames than the 360 version.

#25 Posted by MiniPato (2732 posts) -

Isn't it like standard procedure to prohibit platform exclusive characters?

well since the rumors are looking true look for Elena to be teamed up with Dudley. Christie will be teamed up with Leo (not sure if it's going to be DLC).

I would bet a gallon on gravy on it.

Probably, it would be unfair for 360 players to go up against characters that they have never used or played against.
