Weird, right?
Rumors first started cropping up back at EVO a couple of weeks ago, and now Capcom and Bandai Namco have made it official: the Street Fighter and Tekken franchises will collide next year via a pair of upcoming fighting games.

Capcom mainly discussed its side of the conflict, which will be called Street Fighter X Tekken. That's "Street Fighter Cross Tekken" if you're saying it out loud, sort of like Namco X Capcom, the crossover RPG that Namco released on the PS2. The upcoming fighter will be a two-on-two tag battle game, and so far Ryu and Chun-Li are confirmed for the SF side while Kazuya Mishima and Nina Williams are set on the Tekken side. Dan also makes an appearance in the trailer, but that's not exactly confirmation that he'll appear in playable form. Capcom's game will run on the same engine technology that powered Super Street Fighter IV.

Namco will also develop and release a crossover fighter. If naming conventions hold, this game will probably end up going by Tekken X Street Fighter. That's how Capcom and SNK handled it when they did a similar character swap for Capcom vs. SNK and SNK vs. Capcom. But all of that is unconfirmed at the moment and no actual details on this game are available.

I was a serious Tekken fan early on, but once Tekken 4 hit, that and the subsequent sequels felt like they were quickly losing their way. But the characters themselves are solid, so I'm at least interested to see what Capcom does with them. I'm... a bit less interested in seeing what Namco's developers do with the Capcom characters.

Street Fighter X Tekken is in development for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, but no release date has been given at this time. Here's the game's first trailer.

I'm interested how this will turn out. A little bummed about 2v2 though, I would've prefered 1v1. I've always been horrible at fighting games that were anything but 1v1.

I'm way more excited for Namco's version to be honest.

Like I said in the other thread, E. Honda better be in the Capcom game or I'm going to be pissed.

Goddamnit I have to buy a console now.

Tekken's characters absolutely cream over the SF cast in terms of memorability so this is one crossover I'm exceptionally looking forward to! Namco version of course. I've always preferred my Tekken fighting style to SF's 2D plain.

YOU TALKING SMACK ABOUT MY STREET FIGHTER CHARACTERS YO?

Maybe this speaks for how devalued Tekken has become over the years, but this feels like a step down for Capcom after Street Fighter 4.

What the fuck? That's nuts.

But I'm not really understanding what the difference is between "Tekken X Street Fighter" and "Street Fighter X Tekken". Is there going to be Capcom-developed version of the game and a Namco-developed version of the game alongside each other?

EDIT: Nevermind, like Capcom vs. SNK and SNK vs. Capcom. I need to learn to read better.

Apparently you can only tag during Ultras.

Jeff is in the correct state of mind. I like how he threw "a bit" in there to keep people from raging too much. Ryu hamfistedly juggling Blanka while wearing stupid ass accessories, yeah I'll pass on that one. The other one will be good. Capcom have done more with less.

I def. feel Namco has way more to gain by this than Capcom, but hey, I'm intrigued.  Still would have rather this had been Darkstalkers, though.

ALL RIGHT YO!

Speaking of the Namco version, I want to see how Zangief is going to play.  Will his SPDs work?  It's kinda funny that I'm a little more interested in the Namco game because I want to see the Street Fighter characters in a 3D playing field.

Yeah, that's what it sounded like to me.

I also agree with the Tekken franchise sucking since Tekken 3.

Tekken was an arcade perfect port and one of the defnitive reasons on why I pre-ordered a Playstation back in the mid-ninties.

Big fan of SF. Big fan of Tekken. They are my top 2 fighting franchises of all time. THIS IS GONNA BE FRIKKIN' AWESOME!!!!

#19 Posted by Emilio (3380 posts) -

Yawn... wake me up when Capcom decides to work on a new idea...

Actually, that Pac-Man x Megaman looks far more interesting.

#20 Posted by ryanwho (12082 posts) -

Tekken's high point and SF's low point coincided around the same time, and that is the only time they've ever been anything resembling equals.

#21 Posted by CactusWolf (539 posts) -

I will play both of these.

The original rumors stated that Street Fighter x Tekken would be using the Street Fighter IV engine, and Tekken x Street Fighter would use the Tekken 6 engine.

This makes me sad.  Maybe I was just hoping too much for a Darkstalkers/Vampire Warriors announcement, but it seems unlikely that either of these games can really be for fans of both sources.  Either it will be a Street Fighter game with characters inspired by Tekken, or it will be a Tekken game with characters that kind of look like some Street Fighter characters.  The move sets and play styles are so drastically different as to make a crossover seem, IMHO, ridiculous.

#25 Posted by wwfundertaker (1396 posts) -

Tekken 3 and Street Fighter 2 are probably the best fighting game ive played, now the can fight each other. This is AWESOME.

One game will be good and half full of characters you barely recognize. Just think of it as another SF4 expansion, now with tag.
#27 Posted by damswedon (3174 posts) -

Seriously bummed out by this announcement, I really wanted a Darkstalkers 4 or Super Puzzle Fighter IV Turbo.
The two games have such different play styles I don't see how they can work together, shouldn't the best plan be choose someone who can throw a fireball and throw that fireball from range.

as long as it is like SF4 and not like the newest Tekken....I'll like it.

Tekken is the premier 3D fighting game today, I don't know what you're talking about.

Anyways, I think this is a good venture for both franchises being that they are the most popular in their respective categories. As Jeff mentioned I'm more interested in the Capcom version rather than the Namco one though. Capcom has been on a roll with excellent fighting games that pretty much lead the 2D fighting scene, and it'll be interesting to see how they change Tekken characters to fit the mold.

It's a bit funny that there was a Virtua (Street) Fighter spoof on April 1st yet Tekken is actually making that come true.

SO mega man and pacman confirmed?

Why the Tekken bashing? I would pay to see Armor King vs Blanka and Alex the boxing dinosaur vs Dan any day.

I'm interested in seeing how Namco handles their game with the Street Fighter characters.

Well if Tekken is the premier 3D fighting game today, I guess that speaks for how devalued 3D fighting games have become.

Tekken 3 came out in 1997 and is widely regarded as the high point. Not sure what you're doing a decade later. Hurpa derp is right.

When ya all out of original ideas, do crossovers....yeah

#41 Posted by MjHealy (1822 posts) -

This is pretty random. Not really a fighting game expert myself but don't Street Fighter and Tekken play nothing alike?

#42 Posted by Dizzyhippos (1366 posts) -

Ya do a crossover, don't make a new dark stalkers or rival schools, cross a great fighting game with one that hasn't mattered in a long time good call

Read the whole article.  There are two separate games that play entirely differently.

Also Power Stone. Don't bring the most original fighter in years.

Of all the fighting franchises to pick for a crossover they pick tekken, I like tekken but what would be nice is if they go into another territory that goes outside the punches and kicks and into...FATALITIES. Catch my drift?

Read the article. Namco is making one using the Tekken 6 engine, and Capcom is making one using the SSFIV engine.
#47 Posted by CSXLoser (582 posts) -

So if namco follows Capcom's suit of doing 2 v 2 matches, would Tekken X Street Fighter be the indirect sequel to Tekken Tag?

Well... You'd actually need to scratch the fatalities part... That's not Capcom's style when it comes to fighting games.

SNK would have been the safe choice but if you want to talk about garbage Japanese fighting games KOF is definitely the king nowadays. Of course if we factor in US  we'd have to give the crown to a different franchise if you catch my drift.

I know but it just seem like two more similar franchises could have been used. I just thought that Tekken and Street Fighter don't match up.

Can we also get Street Fighter vs. Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball - Featuring Hakan? I would buy it.
