StreetPass Mii Plaza is a set of games designed to highlight the "StreetPass" functionality built into the Nintendo 3DS. Find Mii / StreetPass Quest is an RPG-esque dungeon quest, and Puzzle Swap is a simple game where players exchange Nintendo-themed puzzle pieces.
Included with the 3DS, StreetPass Mii Plaza takes advantage of multiple elements of the 3DS's functionality. Its main draw, StreetPass support, allows players to collect Miis from other players that have their 3DS in sleep mode nearby. You will only collect the Mii of a fellow 3DS owner if the wireless functions for the 3DS are enabled using the wireless switch on the side. Any Miis collected will reside in your plaza and will have a special greeting for you when you meet them. Up to 10 Miis can be collected at a time (extra Miis will not register) for use in both Puzzle Swap and Find Mii / StreetPass Quest, the two games within the plaza. Play Coins, earned from using the 3DS's pedometer, can also be used in both games for purchasing of heroes and puzzle pieces. The player can fill out a profile to be shared with others with the ability to choose a personal and overall greeting, random trivia such as pet preference and even naming a favorite gaming title. During the firmware update in November 2011, 4 new features were added: Accomplishments, a sound test music player, 7 new puzzles for Puzzle Swap and a new adventure in Find Mii 2/Streetpass Quest.
Puzzle Swap is one of the two current games in StreetPass Mii Plaza. The goal is simple: collect puzzle pieces from people you meet via StreetPass. Users start with one piece of one puzzle, and if they encounter someone with a puzzle piece they don't have, they can copy one piece into their own collection. 2 Play Coins can be spent to buy a puzzle piece; however, there is no guarantee this will always be a new piece, and the chance of receiving a new piece gets lower if there are fewer spaces left to fill. Pieces bought with Play Coins have zero chance of belonging to a completed puzzle, or one they haven't received a piece for yet.
The puzzles so far are:
Each puzzle is 15 pieces, totalling in 105 pieces to finish them all off. The descriptions above only apply to a completed puzzle, transitioning from a fragmented 2D image to a full 3D diorama.
Following the release of the 3.0 firmware update, 7 new puzzles were added. However, the amount of pieces required to complete some of these puzzles now varies. Another addition with the 3.0 firmware update was the inclusion of pink spots. These can only be obtained through Streetpass. The seven new puzzles were:
At the end of February 2012, Nintendo sent out a message telling 3DS owners that new puzzles would be available via Spotpass. The new Spotpass puzzles are:
After the April 2012 Nintendo Direct, Nintendo released more new puzzles over Spotpass.
Find Mii / StreetPass Quest is the second game built into the system as part of the StreetPass Mii Plaza. The title uses basic RPG elements. The user's Mii is the king or queen of a kingdom, but is captured at the beginning of the story. Mii characters met via StreetPass are 'Heroes', used to save him or her. Players can also spend 2 Play Coins to hire a low-level Wanderer, which look like cats or dogs (depending on the user's specified profile preference; it randomizes between the two if no preference is given). Wanderers are never naturally above Level 2. For each time you encounter a Mii via StreetPass, its level increases by 1, up to a maximum of 7. Each level boosts the damage a Hero can do against the ghostly enemies.
Combat is extremely fundamental, with each Mii or Wanderer having two or three possible commands: " Sword", " Magic" and "Next". Sword is the simplest command, and causes them to make three sword swings against the enemy. Sword attacks have a chance to miss completely (doing no damage) or be Critical Hits (triple the usual amount of damage). Once the Hero has run out of Sword swings, they will flee the room before an enemy can retaliate. Armored ghosts mitigate damage by 1 (for example, Level 1 Heroes do no damage, Level 2 does 1 damage, etc.). Heroes who cast Magic will leave the party immediately after casting, due to fatigue (unless their spell defeats every remaining enemy in the room). The magic ability each Hero has depends on the color of their shirt, which is randomized for Wanderers, and identical to a Mii's designated favorite color. Players can only select the Next option if there are two or more Heroes left in the party, sending the current Hero to the back of the queue.
The magic abilities have the following effects:
Upon completion of certain rooms, the player is awarded with hats to put on their Mii in the StreetPass Plaza. Some hats can only be earned by choosing to play the Quest a second time after completing it once. In firmware update 3.0, Nintendo released another quest, Find Mii 2, where three new features were added; potions, combo attacks and the ability to call in adventurers you already have met. Also, more hats were added.
