Streets of Rage

Streets of Rage is a video game that consists of 2 releases

You and a friend are able to take control of three ex-cops: Adam Hunter, Axel Stone and Blaze Fielding as you take to the streets armed with your martial art skills to clean up the Streets of Rage.

Plot

This city was once a happy, peaceful place... until one day, a powerful secret criminal organization took over.  This vicious syndicate soon had control of the government and even the police force.  The city has become a center of violence and crime where no one is safe.  And amidst this turmoil, a group of determined young police officers has sworn to clean up the city. Among them are Adam Hunter, Axel Stone and Blaze Fielding.  They are willing to risk anything, even their lives, on the Streets Of Rage.

Game play

Streets Of Rage is a side scrolling brawler that was developed for the Sega Genesis. It could be argued that it was developed to counter the (initially exclusive) release of Final Fight on the SNES. There are three different protagonists in the game that 1-2 players can control: Axel Stone, Adam Hunter and Blaze Fielding. As these hero ex-cops you take to the streets armed with your martial art skills and plenty of random weapons.

There are only three buttons to use and your D-pad; there is your basic attack button which when pressed repeatedly will produce a combo of punches and flying kicks, a jump button which lets you jump and makes it possible to do an air attack, and your special button which when pressed sends a police car unit to your aid with said police firing either a missile in your direction or a storm of explosive shells your way to the dismay of your enemys.
There isn't that much technique to the fight mechanics other then dodge punches and bash the attack button when an enemy comes your way but there are a couple of different attacks which give you different ways of defeating your enemy.  As I said earlier, you are able to do a single hit in an air attack such as a jump kick or a jump knee in Axel's case. You are also able to grab your opponent from the front or the back, to do this you just need to get close enough to the opponent and it'll automatically happen, that is if you aren't getting your faced bashed in by said opponent.
From the front grab position you can continue to beat your opponent till you knock them to the floor or knock em dead, you can also flip over your opponent to put you in the back grab position where only a suplex awaits for your combatant. Pressing both the attack at and jump button at the precise time will have your character perform a single attack in the opposite direction which helps when a scumbag is steamrolling towards you and you're busy handling the guy in front of you.

The game consists of eight levels or "Rounds" that has a boss(es) waiting for you at the end.  Throughout the levels you can destroy barrels, crates, phone booths, stacks of tires, traffic cones, folding barricades, air ducts and speeding food racks to uncover health items, weapons such as baseball bats, lead pipes, beer bottles etc..., and items such as gold. money bags, extra life's or extra specials.  It is notable that in the last level you cannot use your special attack, and you face every boss throughout the level till you get to the final boss, Mr. X.
-It has also been released on the Nintendo Wii Virtual Console.
