This is the third character in the Mortal Kombat franchise to use the Sub-Zero name. He clearly wears the symbol of the Lin Kuei clan on his left breast and wields a powerful command of elemental ice powers as did the previous users of the name.
Bi Han / Sub-Zero / Noob Saibot
The original Sub-Zero, whose birth name was Bi Han, was a member of the Lin Kuei clan and responsible for the murder of Hanzo Hasashi, his family, and the Shirai Ryu clan. That original Sub-Zero was later killed in the first Mortal Kombat tournament by Scorpion, the wraith of Hasashi who had risen from the Netherrealm seeking vengeance. In death, he became a member of the Brotherhood of the Shadow in the Netherrealm and later returned to the Mortal Kombat tournaments as Noob Saibot.
In the events of Mortal Kombat (2011), Nightwolf throws Noob Saibot into a soulnado created by Quan Chi, which disrupts the soulnado and presumably kills Noob with the resulting explosion.
Kuai Liang / Sub-Zero / Cyber Sub-Zero
Bi Han's younger brother, Kuai Liang, honored him by taking his name and entering the second Mortal Kombat tournament. This new Sub-Zero was not the ruthless assassin that his older brother was. Kuai Liang continued to participate in all of the subsequent tournaments as a hero of Earthrealm.
In the events of Mortal Kombat (2011), the second Sub-Zero is captured by his own clan, the Lin Kuei, after initially refusing to submit himself to their Cyber Initiative. After being converted into a cyborg, he is enlisted in Shao Kahn's army. With the help of Sonya Blade, Jax, and Kabal, they are able to override his programming and return Sub-Zero's mind although it is impossible to reverse the cyborg procedure. Sub-Zero then works as a spy within the ranks of Shao Kahn's army and successfully defeats both Goro and Kintaro before ultimately meeting his own demise at the hands of Sindel in a battle that saw many of Earthrealm's best warriors perish.
