A submarine is an underwater seagoing vessel. Early military submarines had diesel engines that charged the batteries the sub would use while submerged. Modern military submarines have nuclear reactors that power the ship continuously underwater. Due to their nature, submarines are often used in covert missions. Some subs are used as platforms for launching missiles, including nuclear missiles. There are also battery-powered subs that are used for scientific exploration and research, underwater salvage, dockside security inspections, and underwater tourism.
