Sunset Riders is a side-scrolling, action game. Save the Wild West from filthy criminals and you will be rewarded!

Storyline

The Wild West adventure doesn’t exactly have a storyline. The point of the game is to defeat numerous criminals (one at the end of each stage) to earn a reward. Throughout the game the rewards get progressively larger.

Gameplay

The game offers four playable characters: Steve, Billy, Bob, and Cormano. Steve and Billy have revolvers while Bob has a rifle and Carmano uses a shotgun. The rifle and shotgun are slower shooters, but fire multiple bullets in a spread. The revolvers only shoot one bullet at a time, but the bullets fly faster.

Like many other 2D action shooters, the gameplay is quite simple. You run and gun through each stage defeating many enemies along the way to get to the stage’s boss. Bosses have their own captives you have to defeat alongside them, so you’ll have to be sure to take them out first considering the boss is much easier to take out when they are not by his side. The fourth stage is basically a boss level, there is no stage attached to it. You will be thrown into a boss battle right after you defeat the third stage’s boss, Dark Horse.

In stages 2 and 7, you will ride a horse throughout the level until you get to the boss. Enemies will be seen on horses as well in the background and you will have to dodge logs pushed out of wagons as well (making you have to jump).

You will come across many doorways that you can walk through to get power-ups. You might even meet a few ladies along the way!

Power-Ups in the game include rapid fire, dual fire, monetary awards, and extra lives. You will often see multiples of rapid fire, dual fire, and monetary awards in each stage.

Bosses

Stage 1: Simon Greedwell. The first boss of the game is can be relatively easy, just be sure to watch out for the barrels in front of Simon! They will fall off the balcony as you shoot up towards him.

Stage 2: Hawkeye Hank Hatfied. This boss is stealthy and can catch you off guard. Fellow captives during the battle make the fight a little tougher so you’ll have to dodge many fast-moving bullets at once. Towards the end of the battle he will jump down right next you where you will be forced to mash your buttons in order to kill him before he kills you!

Stage 3: Dark Horse. The iron-plated horse that this boss rides on makes the battle much tougher that it looks. To make the fight easier, jump on the balcony to take him out from above. Successful defeat of this boss will immediately take you to another boss fight.

Stage 4: The Smith Brothers. You will have to multitask during this battle a bit more than other boss fights since there are basically two main bosses (one throws bombs while the other throws explosive lanterns). A swinging platform makes it easy to directly shoot at the bosses, but you can’t stay on it too long or you’ll be toast!

Stage 5: El Greco. This Mexican whip-master will have you standing quite a distance from him. His bulletproof shield will make the battle a little harder, but overall it can be quite an easy battle.

Stage 6: Chief Scalpem. This Native American shaman throws knives from above as he dances around the battle area.

Stage 7: Paco Loco. Depending on how you approach the battle, it can be quite easy. This fatty will fire at you from above a fort.

Stage 8: Sir Richard Rose. The final boss in the game has to be defeated twice. After you kill him the first time he will reveal that he was wearing a bulletproof vest, how sly of him! He will hide between two statues, so it will be hard to shoot at him. Once you shoot away at the statues, they will crumble and you will have a much better shot at sir Richard Rose. His fellow captives will do most of the shooting, so be aware of them!

Bonus Stage

Throughout the game you will come across two timed bonus stages, after the second and fifth stages. Picture Whack-a-mole on a TV screen and you’ve got the basic idea of how to play. The stage is set up in first person mode, so it’s a bit different than the stages you come across in the game. Enemies will pop up from eight different locations (up, down, left, right, and all four corners) and you will have to shoot them by aiming in that direction with your crossfire and pressing the fire button. There is nothing to lose in the bonus stage, as the enemies don’t fire back!
