Super Mario 64

A landmark in videogames with 3D gameplay, Super Mario 64 set numerous standards for 3D platforming design upon its release.

Concepts

"Game" 64

Games for the Nintendo 64 with the numbers 64 after the title to denote that it is, in fact, a 64-bit game for the Nintendo 64.
Achievements

Achievements are extra challenges added into video games that sometimes carry a point value or unlock bonus material, and are sometimes solely for bragging rights.
Acrobatics

The ability to fling yourself around the environment gracefully. Wall-running, jumping, massive drops, climbing, and other physical activities are what acrobatics is all about.
Air Current

Air moving with a considerable force from an area of high pressure to an area of low pressure. Used in games to slow things down, speed them up, or make them hover.
Ambient Wildlife

Animals that cannot be interacted with in any way, shape, or form.
Antagonist

The character or group most responsible for thwarting the player's progress through a game. Differs from a boss insofar as the player may not directly interact with the antagonist.
Anthropomorphism

Anthropomorphism is the concept of an object, concept or character that has human qualities or traits, such as speech, a level of intelligence similar or higher than a human's and self consciousness. "Anthro" means "of human" and related to the concept of humanity.
Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence, or AI, commonly refers to the programmed behaviors of NPCs in a game, whether it's the fact that a soldier takes cover behind a wall in Gears of War, or that townspeople cheer upon your arrival to their village in Fable.
Backtracking

Backtracking is the act of navigating through previously explored areas, usually for the purpose of progressing in an objective-based adventure game. Players who are lost may also backtrack to reorient themselves.
Balance Platforms

Platforms that are manipulated by weight. Too much weight on one side can drastically alter the equilibrium. *Not to be confused with Unstable Platforms*
Barrier

Be it an “unopenable” door, a sprawling fence, a sudden outcropping of land, an ocean, a cliff (often a deadly ocean/cliff combo,) a broken-down car, an “invisible wall,” or large trees; barriers in video games manifest themselves in a variety of forms (physical and otherwise).
Bats

Bats are small flying mammals. They may frequent caves or haunted houses.
Been Here Before

When the player character (re)visits a certain area or location that was also present in a previous game, or visited later on in the same game, with some alterations.
Boo

Boo is a ghost-enemy in the Mario universe who pursue Mario until he looks in their direction. They earned their reputation for being "shy" this way. Don't turn your back on them!
Boss Fight

A boss fight is a culminating challenge that pits the player against one or more enemies representing a greater threat and/or difficulty than those previously faced. These scenarios typically feature unique antagonists.
Boss Hallway

A long, usually ominous hallway leading into a boss fight.
Boss Pattern

A distinct and predictable pattern of attacks or movement a boss takes. This can be based in reaction to a player's actions or simply a stringent script the boss adheres to.
Bosses

Video game bosses are usually the main antagonist, and arch nemesis of the main protagonist. In most cases the end of a game is when the main character defeats the final boss.
Breath Meter

This shows you how long you have until you start wishing you had gills. When your breath runs out, you may take damage, or you may expire right there, depending on how sadistic the game designers were!
Bubba

An enormous type of fish that has appeared as an enemy in a number of Mario games.
Bullet Bill

Bullet Bills are enemies in the Mario franchise. They are one of the games' more challenging enemies.
Burning

A concept in which a person or object is on fire and taking continuous damage. It often takes fast movement, water, or an item to heal.
Butterfly

An insect with broad colorful wings.
Cameo Appearance

When a character from an existing media franchise makes a brief appearance in a video game, sometimes without even openly acknowledging their origins.
Camera Control

The ability for a player to control the motion and direction of the in-game camera.
Chain Chomp

A Chain Chomp (or Chomp) is a common enemy in the Mushroom Kingdom, first appearing in Super Mario Bros. 3. They resemble ball and chains, and behave in a very dog like manner, to the point where they even bark.
Chase

When the protagonist is pursuing someone or something in an effort to kill or capture.
Clear Save

Allows the player to continue playing - even though they have finished the game. This allows the completion of unfinished side-quests or the results of the player's victory in the world to be seen.
Collectibles

Collectibles are items such as coins, rings, gems, packages etc. that can be gathered, usually for some kind of reward, or sometimes to simply beat a level. Often (almost too often) the source of earning achievements and trophies on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
Collectibles That Unlock Worlds

Usually seen in 3D platformers, these games ask you to collect certain objects to open up additional levels.
