Super Mario World and Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island are the best Mario games.

Yoshi's Island is an amazing game. The graphics, music, characters, everything is superb.

When I was a kid playing this on the SNES, I could appreciate the graphics and the music, but the gameplay involving baby Mario turned me off. His cries were just too annoying for me at the time. But years later I revisited this title, and loved it fully. No game to this date has looked this pretty, and it has some unique gameplay quirks going too. Even the story and the characters are great. That Kamek wizard dude was sweet, and all the boss fights are fun too. The last boss fight is one of the coolest boss fights in a Mario game.

Then Kirby just straight jacked this game's style in recent years. And as cool as it looked, I thought that game was super boring to play through. A little bit too easy difficulty-wise I guess?

Agreed. The only thing I disliked about Yoshi's Island was Baby Mario, but his crying was an effective means of making you want to keep him on your back.

I'm looking forward to playing through it again when it hits the 3DS.

I liked them all too. But everyone's allowed an opinion...

For instance, I thought Yoshi's Story SUCKED.

Yeah, between their hatred of Yoshi's Island and their saying really stupid fucking things like "they should never make another Metroid game," I think Jeff and Ryan need to do us all a favor and never have an opinion on anything Nintendo does ever again, lest I have another aneurysm.

As someone who likes Yoshi's Story,  even I can admit it IS kinda shitty.

Also, did this come up on the Bombcast or something, because I haven't listened to this week's one yet.

Not gonna lie but I forgot all about Yoshi's Island. I looked up some screenshots and started to remember it. Super Mario World is still the fucking best but I didn't completely hate Yoshi's Island.

When compared to any other Mario game's story, it doesn't really matter. They all suck.

#8 Posted by drowsap (683 posts) -

I like that game but Super Mario World is 1000s times better and a lot of people think if its not as good as the first it is inferior which is hard to argue. I think the worst thing nintendo did was call it Super Mario World 2 it should've just been called yoshis island and I think it would have been looked at on its own merits in stead of being compared to what many see as the best snes games Super Mario World

#9 Posted by Bribo (605 posts) -

While I concur that Yoshi's Island is the most delicious of  videogaming confections, I wouldn't include in my top 5 Mario games because I don't consider it to be a Mario game.
Yes, Mario's in it but then he's also in Dr Mario. And you wouldn't call that a Mario game.

Yoshi's Island is fucking great, I also can say now that Yoshi's Story might not be a great game, but I fucking love that too. "beeeee caaaaarefuuull~!

I still never played it. I'll have to do that sometime...

Haha, well, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Jeff also doesn't care for Super Metroid, which is crazy, but hey - whatever. I'm curious to what Brad will think of Yoshi's Island when he plays it eventually.

I just feel that sometimes, the younger crowd of Giant Bomb is too eager to hop on the bandwagon of the staff. And when it comes to games the younger users probably never played due to them being too young or....errrr....not even born yet - I don't want them to only have one viewpoint and think that games like Yoshi's Island, Donkey Kong Country, or Super Metroid are only "okay" games.

And that's another thing, it broke my heart during the SNES-marathon when a user requested DKC2 to be played, and no one of the entire Giant Bomb staff said they had any copies of the DKC games. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh! I will admit I love the DKC series way more than your average person, but still, those games were huge when they came out.

One of my favorite Yoshi's Island tracks:

Yeah, Yoshi's Story wasn't anywhere near as good as Yoshi's Island, but I still enjoyed it myself. Still a real colorful and cool looking game. Same goes for Yoshi's Island 2 on the DS. I probably liked Yoshi's Story more than that though.

I hold this game in extremely high regard. It is one of my favorite plattform games of all times and also one of the best games I have ever played. You could argue the whole "it's not a Mario game" but the game stands on it's own feet. I didn't buy it because it stood "Super Mario World 2" myself. It just seemed to be a cool game with a crazy artstyle. It does not have the "Mario feel" when it comes to plattforming but who cares when it's good in it's own unique way? It looked great, FX2 made the game do amazing things, the bosses where kick ass (alos quite simple) and a Mario game have never had such an awesome final boss fight as it had in Yoshi's Island.

I choose this over Donkey Kong Country 2 even though I loved the first game that got released the year before. I had multiple arguments with friends why I choose Yoshi's Island instead of the "cool looking game". I regret nothing. Yoshi's Island was and is still today a fantastic game that still looks stunning. Jeff and Brad are entitled to their opinions but right out badmouthing this game seems a bit harsh. Yeah, it may not be a "true" Mario game but what it does it does with much grace and finess.

Touch Fuzzy Get Dizzy.

One of the best platformers ever made.

Jeff loves Super Mario World

#19 Posted by Dayewalker (77 posts) -

I personally loved the original Super Mario World the best, but Yoshi's Island was definitely a solid game too. I remember seeing it for the first time on a display system as a kid and I immediately had to have it.

#20 Posted by TheHT (11802 posts) -

That final boss fight was genuinely epic. None of that stupid-ass hipster epic.

I'm not sure if I'd commit to those being the best Mario games, but playing them on my Gameboy Advance, I really loved Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island, they were great platformers.

@FreakAche: They may have said it on the day they played all those SNES games for members. I watched a little since my friend has a premium account. Jeff also said that he didn't like the Metroid Prime series which I think is weird because that was one of the most graceful transitions from 2d to 3d ever and those games are pretty atmospheric.

I had no idea people felt that way about Yoshi's Story.

Still haven't played it. It's on my pile of shame.

It's from the Members Only SNES stream from a month or so back (I think it's in Part 1 that's on the site, should you get a chance to see it).

Jeff and Ryan hate Yoshi's Island?

Cool, they get 50 respect points each from me.

#30 Posted by CommodoreGroovy (561 posts) -

I went back and played Yoshi's Island for the first time since I was a child, although I didn't really remember much from the game, it still holds up very well. The art style is vibrant and unique (especially for its time), the music is bouncing, and the gameplay design is smart and fun.

this is probably my favorite mario game...i get bummed out when they bag on it.

When I saw this thread in recent threads, I knew I had to post in it.

I'm glad I beat myself to the punch by a year and seven months.

Maybe if I had played it when it was new I'd feel differently, but... nope. Don't like anything about it.

Playing a game where you have to keep watch over a baby? NO WAY!

Now, that Yoshi's Story? Now there's a game I used to like playing!

#35 Posted by Shortbreadtom (864 posts) -

I just don't like the jumping mechanics, which is pretty important in a platformer. I know it's deliberately floaty, but I much prefer a more deliberate jump.

#36 Posted by Scrawnto (2467 posts) -

It has such a good soundtrack! And destructible environments, sort of! I played the heck out of that game. It's one of the few games on the SNES that I actually finished.

#37 Edited by LiK (925 posts) -

Yoshi's Island is fine except for Baby Mario. Stupid crying shithead.

#38 Posted by granderojo (1792 posts) -

Fuck Yoshi's Island. I thought it was bad when I rented it on SNES in the summer of 1996.

I think this needs its own thread. I think Dr Mario is a Mario game. Maybe not of the Super Mario Bros. franchise, but of the Mario character.

Hold the god damned phone. The staff has besmirched the name of Super Metroid and Yoshi's Island?!

They're fucking monsters.

#44 Posted by civid (549 posts) -

Never played the original Yoshi's Island, although Yoshi's Island 2 for the DS was quite good. Now Yoshi's Story! Man, what a game. That game was fucking trippy, I mean for christ sake, the second boss is a GIANT CLOUD THAT YOSHI SWALLOWS! Yoshi is a monster. That and also constantly on drugs

#45 Posted by Neonie (438 posts) -

I liked both island and story but I can honestly see why anyone wouldn't like either of them. Also I hate dinosaurs .. and (generic, not android or human esq) robots. Just throwing that out there. Dinosaurs and robots both suck.

#46 Edited by Dethfish (3697 posts) -

Jeff is bananas. I played Yoshi's Island again sometime last year and still thought it was great, and I'd like to think that only a little bit of my opinion is nostalgia driven. Yes, baby mario is bullshit and annoying, but overall the game is still one of the best nintendo platformers ever made. It's kind of hard too, certainly more than most mario games.

I'm not surprised at his opinion though. He dislikes DKC and Super Metroid so there's already no hope for him.

Yoshi's Island may be the bomb, but Jeff and Ryan are the Giant Bomb, so...

You know, if playing Yoshi's Island had overheated my SNES and burned my house down when I was twelve years old, I would probably hate that game!

But I wouldn't try to claim it was a bad game.

The Bombcast is barely about games anymore they're just so jaded about everything they don't even talk about games at all
