A partner is someone in a duo that shares the same status and/or billing. In video games, you often switch from one to the other because they have different strengths and weaknesses.
A species of small bird from the Mario games. It is often seen riding a magic carpet and made is usually associated with Super Mario Bros. 2, where it was a somewhat common enemy.
A species of carnivorous plants that reside in pipes. Some specimens can spit fireballs.
Podoboos are living fireball enemies usually found in Castles in the Mario games. The original ones would only jump out of lava in simple patterns.
Pokey is a cactus enemy often (although not uniquely) seen in the Mario series. It's body segments can be individually destroyed.
A spiny fish that chases Mario. Occasionally jumps out of the water.
Porting is a term used when a game designed to run on one platform is converted to run on a different platform. Quality varies, though some titles are packaged with extras.
Power Ups can be used to give the controlling character, or any other character, temporary or permanent upgrades.
Games that include a previous installment of the game's series. Usually, this extra game can be accessed via a menu or can be found within the game world.
A broad spectrum of games can be described as remakes, from straightforward graphical overhauls to extensive revision of gameplay and story elements. In the most basic sense, a remake keeps the original's core gameplay and plot but makes significant changes to peripheral aspects.
A larger or smaller version of an enemy encountered elsewhere in a game. Larger variants are often used as bosses.
Rex are purple dino-dragons that need to be jumped on twice.
Reznors are a quartet of fire-spitting dinosaurs standing on ferris wheel-like platforms. They act as mini-bosses throughout the game.
A sleeping fish that is speedy and dangerous when awakened.
A creature which is made up of mostly identical segments and has an elongated shape.
A sequel (also called a follow-up) is a game that carries forward the gameplay concepts, and often the story, of a previous game to which it is officially linked.
Sidekicks, different from partners, are less powerful, less important characters who support the main protagonist and generally stick by their side.
Sidesteppers are crablike enemies that first appeared in the Mario Bros. arcade game. When hit from underneath, they get angry and start moving more quickly.
A segmented platform that, when stepped on, will move erratically in a set pattern. The clue is to not fall off until the destination is reached.
A Snifit is a Shy Guy who spits bullets from behind the mask on their face.
Clouds that, for some reason, can be stood on without falling through.
Sparks, also known as L'il Sparkies, are a recurring enemy in the Mario universe. They are an electricity-emitting orb that normally follow a specific path.
Tiny red-shelled creatures from Super Mario Bros. Always a pain to defeat as they are covered with spikes.
A gameplay mechanic which allows the player to move faster than the normal speed. Usually for a set amount of time.
A two-dimensional image or animation overlaid into a scene. The foundation of early 2D games, making up everything from props to the player-controlled character.
Damaging enemies by simply jumping on top of them.
The strategy of demonstrating how awesome something is by putting the word "super" in its title. Incredibly popular among developers making games for the Super Nintendo, which itself counts as an example.
Koopas find a new way to fly.
Whether by item or otherwise, temporary invincibility provides the user a brief moment where they are impervious to attack.
The player character is seen at a distance from a number of different possible perspective angles. There is generally a movable camera but it can also be in a fixed position. It most commonly refers to a viewpoint behind the player character.
