joystick vs d-pad, RT vs X

#1 Posted by SmithSyndicate (95 posts) - 2 years, 7 months ago

What's your flavor?

I use the joystick and RT. I probably couldn't make it through half a level using the d-pad or running with X.

Joystick and RT. I have no idea why anyone would want to use X, that's gonna screw you up while jumping eventually. Didn't know you could use the d pad.

#3 Posted by mubress (1516 posts) - 2 years, 7 months ago

RT for me but I'm actually using the d-pad on a fightpad I have. Otherwise it would be the joystick for sure, 360 d-pad no good.

Joystiq and X for me.

Haven't had a problem yet with jumping and using X for running, but if it starts to happen eventually I will just swap to using RT.

Analog stick and Right Trigger

Analog stick and X, though I suspect I'll have to get used to RT for running eventually.

#7 Posted by BBQBram (1978 posts) - 2 years, 7 months ago

Analog stick and LT actually, just clamping down my hand, running to the right.

I'm the first D-Pad, X guy? I've been using the claw for a while, so it doesn't really mess up my jumps, plus I think I used the same method with SNES games.

I switch it up between the analog and d-pad, but stay with the X button. I mean if you played any sort of old school platformer back in the day, this pretty much feels like that control-wise, as the X button might as well be the B button on an NES controller for me. The right trigger messes me up something fierce as it just doesn't feel right.

Analog and RT.

I've found my skills at the game don't carry over day to day so I'm always having to relearn it.

Mostly Joystick and RT

But for the first of the "The Kid" levels I had to use the Dpad

Stick and RT.  Seems to work a lot better for most levels in trying to guide him carefully and jump back and forth.  Then again, that may be because the XBox Dpad is terrible.

So how bout Joystick vs D-Pad vs Nes D-Pad
and RT vs X vs A

#14 Posted by CookieMonster (2362 posts) - 2 years, 7 months ago

Joystick and X. I'm too used to using the x button now to change to RT and I'm quite comfortable with that since I spend a lot of time playing fifa with mainly the x and a buttons.

#15 Posted by JJOR64 (18127 posts) - 2 years, 7 months ago

Joystick and RT.  I've also used my arcade stick and I did quite well.

#16 Posted by Googly (239 posts) - 2 years, 7 months ago

The analog stick feels really good with this game.  I can't imagine trying to play through it with the d-pad.  I might as well tape down the x button because I never stop running, even if it gets me killed a lot because Meat Boy moves so fast.

#17 Posted by OwnlyUzinWonHan (1445 posts) - 2 years, 7 months ago
@JJOR64: I was actually thinking about using a stick, for some reason I prefer using that over the 360's analog stick for 2D games.
#18 Posted by FreakAche (2869 posts) - 2 years, 7 months ago

Well it's an undisputed fact that the 360 d-pad is unuseable.

d-pad and rt

We need a poll. Analog stick and RT here.

#21 Posted by matrix_hiei (143 posts) - 2 years, 7 months ago

I have a Hori controller with a great d-pad that I use mainly for fighting games. I use that for SMB and the trigger to run.

#22 Posted by Seiken_Enhasa (74 posts) - 2 years, 7 months ago

Analog stick and right trigger.

Mouse, keyboard.

X and D-pad.  Made it into stage 6 and I've done some of the 1 - 3 stage dark world without any problems.  I might try the stick a bit and see if I can get better air control with it.  The xbox d-pad is the worst d-pad I've ever used.

Analog stick, and RT.

Holding X messes with my wall jumps.

#26 Posted by Eristocrat (434 posts) - 2 years, 6 months ago

I'm most of the way through the game with Stick and X, RT probably is better but I'm used to all my air control being on my right thumb by now.

Joystick and RT.

#28 Posted by damswedon (3091 posts) - 2 years, 6 months ago

Joystick and RT, the placement of the D-pad is terrible.

#29 Posted by SuperEvilDOOM (30 posts) - 2 years, 6 months ago

I used the d-pad and X at first but I eventually switched to the analog stick. It seems a little more jerky using the d-pad.

#30 Posted by ShadowVirus (775 posts) - 2 years, 6 months ago

Analog and RT.
Also, I found out today you can use the right analouge stick instead of the left stick as well.

#31 Posted by Sessh (280 posts) - 2 years, 6 months ago

Analog stick, since the D-pad is god awful, and RT, except on the third The Kid level, where I had to use X for my finger to not fall off.

#32 Posted by Chaser324 (3846 posts) - 2 years, 6 months ago

Analog stick and X. Right trigger would probably work better, but using X just feels natural since it mirrors old school Super Mario Bros. on the NES.

I got 100% in the game having never used either the D-pad or the RT.  X and A all the way.

Joystick and X

#35 Posted by louiedog (2286 posts) - 2 years, 6 months ago

X to run for sure. NES games trained me to hold down a button with the tip of my thumb and to tap another button with the rest of it.

Joystick and X

#38 Posted by isbecome (72 posts) - 2 years, 6 months ago

Joystick and X. I haven't had any problems with using the joystick. Not sure if I would do any better then I have been doing with a good dpad.

I might try the RT for running, didn't even think about it.

#39 Edited by golguin (2371 posts) - 2 years, 6 months ago

Analog stick and X. I couldn't imagine using anything else and I don't see myself having any problems with that control scheme since I do use my thumb to use both buttons at the same time. So far "The Kid" has taken me the longest to complete at 1 hour and 30 minutes.

#40 Posted by Kyreo (4594 posts) - 2 years, 6 months ago

Analog and RT.  My index finger hurts after a while though and I sometimes switch to X.

#41 Posted by Zidd (1775 posts) - 2 years, 6 months ago

RT and analog stick.

#42 Posted by TheMathlete (225 posts) - 2 years, 6 months ago

I'm using a fightpad, so dpad and LT
