The original Super Monkey Ball game debuted in Japan as an arcade cabinet in 2000. The game was ported to Gamecube in 2003, and since then several renditions have been released for various platforms.
Super Monkey Ball for the iPhone and iPod Touch was easily the most hyped application since it was first announced at an Apple press conference in March of 2008. Since then, it appears the hype has proved right as the Sega port has dominated the top game lists on the iTunes Application Store ever since it was launched on July 11th, 2008. Since the original release Sega has released a "lite" version of the game via the App Store for free.
As in the previous installments of the franchise, Super Monkey Ball revolves around a monkey... in a ball. The goal is to roll around levels, collecting bananas until you reach the portal at the end.
Yeah, that's about it.
The big draw about the iPhone version of Super Monkey Ball revolves around the tilt mechanic that uses the iPhone's accelerometer to control the player. By tilting the phone, the player can tilt the level, and the physics-based monkey ball rolls around accordingly.
The game includes over 100 levels, as well as bonus levels for collecting all the bananas in a level.
Another draw of Super Monkey Ball is the acclaimed graphics of the game, which are considered highly impressive for a phone-based title. Many have compared them to the graphics of the Nintendo DS. Despite flaunting it's colorful and childish motif, the game is still inviting to people of many ages.
