Overview

In the case of the Super Nintendo, the word "super" was often placed at the beginning of the titles of games whose franchises has previous games on other Nintendo systems, such as the NES and the Game Boy. Such "superized" games include Super Metroid (the third Metroid game, following Metroid for the NES and Metroid II: Return of Samus for the Game Boy), Super Bomberman (following NES Bomberman), Super Castlevania IV (previous Castlevania titles were available on the NES and Game Boy), and so on. (Not to be confused with the various Super Mario- titles for the SNES, since the "super" in the names refer to characters.)

This naming convention later fell out of style, with "Super" just being a term for general improvement over a previous version ( Street Fighter II Turbo to Super Street Fighter II) or just an adjective to convey the overall awesomeness of the game itself.
