"Snes", "S-N-E-S" or something else?

When I first got into video game podcast I was always confused about this "snes" that everyone played growing up.  I figured it was super old pre-NES console that I'd never heard of but then someone mentioned that it had Mario on it and I finally connected that they were referring to the, "S-N-E-S" or "Super Nintendo."

To this day, podcasts are the only places where I've heard it called "snes" and not "super nintendo" or "S-N-E-S".  Is this the norm?

I've always called it a snes. S-N-E-S takes too much work to say for my dumb American mouth.

Funny, I always heard "snes" throughout the years.

N-E-S, but Snes.

Snes.  What's the point of an acronym that takes longer to say than the regular word/name?

It's S-N-E-S or Super Nintendo. Snes just sounds dumb.

Snes IS the acronym :P S.N.E.S is the initialism. *adjusts arrogance hat*

To the OP, I say Snes. I agree it sounds horrible, but growing up, I NEVER heard S.N.E.S. But that sounds stupid too and takes about 4 times longer to say.

The argument that people use that you should say the initials because it stands for something is totally stupid though. You don't hear people say "I'm going S.C.U.B.A diving on the weekend." By that reasoning, acronyms shouldn't exist at all. THEN THERE'D BE NO FUBAR.

SNES was always said in london for me.

#22 Posted by BrickRoad (690 posts) - 1 year, 11 months ago

SNES when I write, Super Nintendo or Snez when I say it. Yeah, SneZ, using the hard S sound due to the lack of extra S.

I cringe everytime I hear someone say Snes. I say Super Nintendo. I heard some 20 year old kid the other day call it "original nintendo" when talking with him about Star Fox.

#29 Posted by TheHT (8111 posts) - 1 year, 11 months ago

I used to always call it Super N.E.S.

Super Nintendo, Super N-E-S or S-N-E-S are the only acceptable answers (in that order). I wonder if this is a regional thing?

#34 Posted by MikkaQ (9712 posts) - 1 year, 11 months ago

It's been nes and snes my whole life, spelling out acronyms are literally useless if it takes more time to say each letter than just saying acronym like a word.

Anything less than that is blasphemy.

S.N.E.S. is far shorter than Super Nintendo Entertainment System. But even then, what about www for World Wide Web?
#38 Posted by YetiAntics (1468 posts) - 1 year, 11 months ago

I was a Genesis kid. Cousin had a SNES though, and we were next door neighbors.

We called it "Super Nintendo".
None of this abbreviated crap.

I've never heard anyone say S-N-E-S, but then I've never heard any of my friends say snes either, I don't think they'd know what it is. I'd say snes or Super Nintendo.

#40 Posted by GetEveryone (4448 posts) - 1 year, 11 months ago

Always 'Snes'.

#41 Posted by Gamer_152 (13243 posts) - 1 year, 11 months ago

I've heard it called the "Snes", "S.N.E.S." or "Super Nintendo" and as far as I can tell there's no solid consensus on which one is the norm. Personally I call it the "Snes".

Shhhuuupahh Nin-teennnnn-dooooo in an ultra-racist Japanese accent.

I've always referred to it as a "Super Nintendo".  I've only heard people say SNES on podcasts.

#46 Posted by ShaggE (4432 posts) - 1 year, 11 months ago

"Ol' Supey-Supes".

#47 Posted by Moth_Pope (424 posts) - 1 year, 11 months ago

Always called it a 'snes' here, too. I think it's definitely more of a UK thing though, as most American's seem to call it the S.N.E.S. from what I've heard.

I've always pronounced it "S" followed by "nes". Two syllables.
