I've been thinking of the general eras of Nintendo and what reps each has. NES has loads, both reps for its one hit wonders that went nowhere (Ice Climbers, ROB, Little Mac, Pit) and the franchises that everyone knows (Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Kirby). SNES has its fair share too with Rare's DK & Diddy, Fox, Ness and Captain. Even Gamecube has a bunch of names on the roster in Olimar and Villager. But N64 has no reps because during the N64 era Nintendo wasn't inventing new IP, that was Rare's job. Banjo, Conker, Perfect Dark, Jet Force Gemini & Goldeneye were basically all the new IPs of the N64 era since Nintendo focused on reinventing their franchises as has become their custom. As a result it's hard to look at the N64 era and say what you'd see pulled from it. In a perfect world Banjo would be remembered as the best IP to come out of the N64 and would be in Smash 2014. You'd also probably want to put Paper Mario in there for good measure since that RPG is a goddamned classic.
But this is not a perfect world and the best candidate for a rep of the games of the N64 era would be James Bond from Goldeneye. Preferably not the new Bond like in the throwback Goldeneye Nintendo put out 4 years ago but the old Bond from the old game. Nintendo has managed to remake Goldeneye recently on the Wii so they apparently have some relationship still in place, could they do it? Would they? What moves would he have? I don't know. I think it could happen though come to think of it.
I think this could happen. Unless the old men at Nintendo are too old to even think about throwing back to the N64 era. It'd be a good pick given Banjo can't happen I think. What do you think?
