Overview
Super Star Wars is a run and gun platforming that was originally released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), and later remastered for the Super Nintendo (SNES). Most missions consist of shooting and making precise jumps using either Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, or Chewbacca depending on the level. At the end of most levels, the player must defeat a boss. The game also features Mode 7 graphics in levels that required the player to drive a landspeeder or fly a X-Wing Star Fighter. Audio features a Stereo or Mono MIDI rendition of John William's themes along with sound effects ranging from blaster shots to Jawa death noises. It features three difficulty settings called: Easy, Brave, and Jedi.
Super Star Wars was released on the Wii Virtual Console in North America on August 10, 2009. The other titles in the Super Star Wars series, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, are expected to follow in the near future.
Plot Synopsis
In Super Star Wars, the plot takes a liberal approach to the story featured in Star Wars IV: A New Hope using text -driven dialog with a photo from the movie to help illustrate the characters.
Episode IV
A New Hope
It is a period of Civil War.
Rebel Spaceships, striking
from a hidden base have won
their first victory against
the evil Galactic Empire.
During the battle, Rebel
spies managed to steal secret
plans to the Empire's
ultimate weapon, the DEATH
STAR, an armored space
station with enough power
to destroy an entire planet.
Pursued by the Empire's
sinister agents, Princess
Leia races home aboard her
starship, custodian of the
stolen plans that can save her
people and restore
freedom to the galaxy....
The Story begins with an Imperial Star Destroyer chasing and firing upon Leia's ship, the Tantive IV, while we watch an escape pod blast off from the ship.
In the first level, you start off as Luke Skywalker, a farm boy, who is wandering the desert planet of Tatoonie. Eventually you run across C-3PO, a droid, who has crash landed on this planet. However, instead of R2-D2 being bought by Luke Skywalker, Luke must now fight his way into the Sandcrawer and rescue R2-D2. R2-D2 reveals a secret message from Princess Leia, designated for an Obi-Wan Kenoibi. Wanting to learn more, Luke sets out to reach Ben Kenobi and fights Jawas and Sandpeople along the way to find Obi-wan Kenobi, an old Jedi Knight. He uncovers the rest of the message, revealing that Princess Leia's father needs General Kenobi's help in the fight against the Empire. Obi-Wan Kenobi asks for Luke's help, saying he cannot do it alone. He then gives Luke a lightsaber.
Luke accompanied by the other three fight through Mos Eisley to a Cantina, reaching a Wookie named Chewbacca. After a Catina fight, Chewbacca introduces Luke to Han Solo, captain of the Millennium Falcon, who will get them off the planet. However, the Millennium Falcon gets captured by the Death Star's tractor beam and Luke, Han, or Chewbacca must fight their way through to reach Princess Leia and deactivate the tractor beam. After deactivating the tractor beam, Darth Vader and Ben Kenobi square off in one final duel, where Darth Vader slays Obi-Wan Kenobi.
After escaping the Death Star, Luke Skywalker pilots an X-Wing fighter as the Rebel Alliance does battle against the Death Star. Luke pilots down the Death Star Trench and blows up the space station. Back at the Rebel base, Luke, Chewbacca, and Han are all hailed as heroes, while text at the bottom, foreshadows the Empire's next strike, and the credits begin to roll.
Super Star Wars features fifteen different levels. Eleven of these use either Han, Chewbacca, or Luke, unlocking each character as the plot progress. Each character comes equipted with a gun that can be upgraded throughout the course of the game that allows increased rate of fire and in one instance, homing ability. However, there is little difference between the characters until Luke reaches receives his lightsaber which functions as the game's only melee weapon. Luke may switch between his pistol and lightsaber at any given time. There are also two landspeeder levels, where Luke must get to his next destination while shoot Jawas. In the final two levels, Luke must pilot an X-Wing and destroy tie fighters and destroy the Death Star. Both the landspeeder and X-Wing levels use Mode 7 graphics.
Super Star Wars is notorious for its difficulty with numerous onslaught of quick enemies, unforgiving pitfalls, difficult boss fights, and lack of any password system or other game saving feature.

The first of three notoriously difficult platformers in the Super Star Wars franchise. This installment was notably more formidable due to the lack of a save or password system.
