Season's Beatings: Ascension Preview!

This event is taking place in Cleveland from the 28th to the 30th, featuring all sorts of games and players from EVO as well as new games that have been released after:

Featured games

If you saw EVO this year you'll know that it was the Mexicans and the Koreans who stole the show in a lot of the games on display, and many of them are making the return trip to the USA for Ascension including these two crazy KOF players:

the SSFIV: AE 2012 EVO Champion Infiltration

and one of my favourite players in UMVC3, Mame Spider.

Recent releases, TTT2, P4A and DOA5 will all be at Ascension, I'm looking forward to seeing what the highest level matches of those games look like. If you've seen or taken part in the Giant Bomb P4A Community tournaments you'll know how fun that game is. TTT2 has had a very positive response from the 3D fighting game players and DOA5 was just released so we'll have to see how that goes, if it's half as nuts as the story was in the Giant Bomb Quick Look it should be good to watch at least.

Jeff Gerstmann vs. Max, Max completes Retro Assist Me series

Maximilian is the most prominent member of the Fighting Game Community on Youtube (34 million views) with his fighting game and FPS videos. His Assist Me show is particularity good, check out episode 1 out of 4 of Retro Assist Me. 1/3rd Back to the Future parody, 1/3rd part continuation of the Assist Me story and 1/3rd introduction into the recently released Marvel vs. Capcom Origins.

Both Max and Jeff's first online ranked match in Tekken TAG 2 when it first came out was against each other and was recorded in Max's video of his impressions of TTT2's online.

Mame Spider is coming back? AMAZING.

#5 Edited by Waffley (142 posts) -

Can't wait to see Mame Spider back in action. I sincerely hope the turnout for AE gets close to matching Marvel. I love both games but the SF community has been doing other stuff as of late.

That's pretty damn awesome that their first matches were against each other.

Also Kappa.

AE is so hype omg. (unless its rufus)

and who can not get hype for marvel? It's awesome.

whens marvel?

#8 Posted by Napalm (9020 posts) -

I can respect the beating Infiltration gave everybody, but I really hope this doesn't turn into him running another train on literally every SSFIVAE player.

#9 Posted by SuperWristBands (2266 posts) -

Love ya FLStyle, I seem to always be unaware that these things are happening despite following a few of the bigger FGC guys on twitter. I would have missed it if not for this.

I can't wait to see Champ squash Chris G

#11 Posted by Reddy1124 (139 posts) -

Who do you guys think are going win the MVC3 ft15s?

They are:

FChamp vs. ChrisG

Frutsy vs. ChrisG

OMG itz Andre vs. CJShowstopper

Personally, I think Champ, ChrisG, and Andre.

#12 Posted by ImmortalSaiyan (4676 posts) -

Season's beating shaping up to be great this year. There are just so many games. Hopefully each gets good stream time. Will there be multiple stream? I don't want AE and Marvel dominating the steam even though I do like those games.

#13 Edited by thegoldencat7 (1496 posts) -

Yeah you're probably right about all those. ChrisG/Fchamp will probably go down to the wire though.

There's also going to be a USA Vs the World 5on5 Exhibition. The US team is obviously a strong favourite there.

And there's going to be an EG Vs the World SF4 thing. Can't say I find the notion that exciting but I'll say the World for that as they'll have the EVO #1 & #2.

#14 Posted by DocHaus (1325 posts) -

No animu fighters? :(

Seriously though, best of luck to all those heading to the tourney to engage in digital fisticuffs. Don't suppose any GB duders are making a quixotic run?

The Pre-Show is live now.

Drunk Yipes Vs. Viscant right now.

Does anyone know when Fchamp will be playing against Chrisg? Or if it already happened can you point me to an archive?

#30 Posted by thegoldencat7 (1496 posts) -

The USA Vs the World Marvel exhibition has started.

Stream here.

#31 Edited by DocHaus (1325 posts) -

Wow, just watching a Marvel match, Tayson taunts Justin Wong when he's one hit away from victory, Wong responds with Iron Fist's Level 3 super and wins the match instead. WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?

EDIT: Also, there's about 13.5K eyeballs on the ConsoleCombat stream now, so the thing has pretty much slowed down to slideshow mode.

#32 Posted by AURON570 (1674 posts) -

Alright I have a question, how come America always gets to alternate between their players, while players on the other 'World' team have to play all their matches in one go? Is it like home rules or something?

Pretty exciting stuff though, good to see them trying out new teams.

#33 Posted by thegoldencat7 (1496 posts) -

Yeah pretty much. They call it running the gauntlet. Everyone ends up playing everyone so its not like it gives the US team an advantage.

Pretty goddamn hype so far.

#34 Edited by FLStyle (4665 posts) -

Sounds like it's been a good exhibition, I'll have to check out the archive.

EDIT: No archive, I'll find what I can.

#37 Posted by FLStyle (4665 posts) -

P4A ran way past its finishing time so TTT2 top 8 is on now on stream 2 and SFxT is either happening off-stream or has been cancelled altogether because you know, it's a piece of shit.

#39 Posted by DocHaus (1325 posts) -

So where's the VF5FS stream? I mean it came out in the states this year so surely there are some dedicated people rearin' to go, right?

...right?

#40 Posted by FLStyle (4665 posts) -

UMVC3 First to 15

Chris G 15 - 10 Filipino Champ

The EVO champion was far from his best against the man he beat to make the EVO grand final, EVO 2012's 3rd place, Chris G.

Both East Coast and West Coast coaches and hype-men were awesome

SSFIV: AE 2012 Top 16 next, followed by UMVC3 Top 16.

#41 Edited by thegoldencat7 (1496 posts) -

Well my money was on Chris G but I can't be too happy about the result. The ideal outcome would have been for them to both somehow lose.

Infiltration Vs. Alex Valle up first.

Get hype!

#42 Posted by DocHaus (1325 posts) -

Infiltration knocked over by KBRAD. Did anyone see that coming?

#43 Posted by FLStyle (4665 posts) -

No way! KBRAD is the winner defeating the EVO champion Infiltration in the GF.

Crazy Cammy play.

#44 Posted by thegoldencat7 (1496 posts) -

Oh dear, Combofiend pulling a Ryan Davis. Kotaku will no doubt be informed.

Yeah I don't think Infiltration got his tactics right at all. He played the match-up like he was fighting Zangief, constantly backing off and cornering himself. K-Brad could just focus purely on offence. He did play really clean though.

#45 Posted by JJOR64 (18954 posts) -

Just started watching. Will watch the archive for Grand Finals AE for sure.

#46 Posted by FLStyle (4665 posts) -
  • Chris G dominant this weekend, congrats to him
  • Combofiend shouldn't feel too bad about what happened, this isn't another Aris incident, he just needs to remove that specific word from his vocabulary
  • Congrats to the two streamers Console Gaming and Addmitt filling in for Spooky, I hope Spooky himself isn't too down about not making the event
#47 Posted by Demoskinos (14765 posts) -

So, I didn't catch the end. Who won the DOA stuff and who'd they use?

#48 Posted by FLStyle (4665 posts) -

@Demoskinos said:

DOA4 and 2-time Mortal Kombat EVO champion Perfect Legend used Gen Fu (at the asking of the DOA5 director) against a Jann Lee player, but lost the first match, so he switched to Jann Lee and beat him 3 matches in a row against the other guy's Jann Lee.

PL's main normally is actually Ayane.

#49 Posted by Demoskinos (14765 posts) -

@FLStyle: Yeah, I saw an awful lot of Jann Lee and especially Ayane because of her broken 66KK4

Patches are in the works to make the playing field a little more even according to the PL post-match interview, he's had a lot of discussions with the devs who were there.
