This game also contains multiplayer: a deathmatch mode and a race mode. In deathmatch the player can play as various superman characters in ships, such as Superman's ship that delivered him to Earth. The two players fly around in an attempt to shoot each other down. As for the race mode, one player places rings around a track and the other player must go through them to be victorious. It was initially intended for four players, but only two may participate in these modes.
In 2008 it also became one of the select few games to receive a damning retrospective review by the Angry Video Game Nerd. An honor bestowed on only the very poorest and most infuriating games. James Rolfe , who produces the reviews, brought specific attention to the games poor collision detection, and lack of check points.

Overview
Superman 64 is a game based on Superman: The Animated Series. While repeatedly referred to as "Superman 64" this is not its official title. The actual title of the game is simply " Superman". The 64 moniker is based on the "Game" 64 trend and was adopted by players to differentiate it from the numerous other "Superman" games on different platforms. It was released on May 31, 1999 for the Nintendo 64 and was developed by Titus Interactive. The game is notorious for its overwhelmingly negative reception from critics.Plot
The game opens with Lex Luthor capturing Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, and Dr. Emil Hamilton. They're placed into a virtual recreation of Metropolis, so Superman must enter this world to rescue them. At the beginning of the game Luthor states; "If you want to save your friends, solve my maze!" The maze, however, consists of hoops that Superman is supposed to fly through before time runs out. If the player strays too far from the area of the hoops, time will be deducted and the player will fail the level.Gameplay
Superman's powers and speed have been greatly diminished from the canon of the show, which the developers explain as kryptonite fog limiting his powers. The player must fly through several sets of these rings and perform tasks such as defeat five thugs or pick up cars, and if he fails, he is back to flying through the rings again. If successful he can enter the action segments, with combat that revolves around hitting one button until you win, and super powers, which must be acquired as pick-ups and can only be used for a few seconds.
Rings are a common obstacle.
Critical Reception
Superman 64 was universally panned by critics. Common complaints included the overly sensitive flying controls, the poor graphics and animations, the poor use of superpowers, and the repetitive nature of the game. Superman 64 was also critically panned for missing the opportunity to put Superman's powers to full potential. The game went on to collect "worst game of the year" awards for 1999 from multiple publications.
