Susano-o
CHARACTER
A god from Japanese mythology, who was born along with Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi when Izanagi washed his face of the evils of Yomi. Usually appears as the ultimate Persona of the Fool arcana in the Persona games.

Overview

Susano-o, sometimes romanized as Susanowa, is a Shinto god of the storm and seas. His many depredations on earth caused Amaterasu to seek refuge in the Ama-no-Iwato. As a result he was banished from the heavenly realm of the gods and descended to the Izumo province.

One particularly popular story tells of his confrontation with Yamato-no-Orochi, an eight headed serpent. Susano-o one day came across Ashi-nadzuchi and his wife Te-nadzuchi saying a tearful farewell to their daughter, Kushinada-hime, who was to be the next sacrifice to be devoured by Yamato-no-Orochi, an eight-headed dragon. He then turned the girl into a comb, intoxicated the serpent with vast amounts of sake, and slew him in his drunken state. Kushinda-hime was then restored to her original form and given to Susano-o to be his bride. The mystical blade Kusanagi was also retrieved from the serpent's tail.

In Basil Chamberlain's translation of the Kojiki Susano-o is quite literally translated as "His-Swift-Impetuous-Male-Augustness".
