Compared to the SVD sniper rifle, the SV-98 features better accuracy. The SV-98 has a free-floating cold-forged barrel. The barrel is also threaded so a flash hider or suppressor can be attached. Free-floating barrel is when the barrel does not rest on the rifle stock, rather the barrel rests on the receiver and the receiver rests on the stock.  

New versions of the SV-98 are being made available with chambering for the 7.62 x 51mm NATO cartridge and the .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge.
