Sweden is now 491 years old! We celibrate by doing....nothing.

Unlike most countries we don't celebrate much. In fact, until 2005 it wasn't even a national holiday. In an attempt to make us celebrate more they made it into a holiday, but we still don't do much on this day 6th of June.

Sverige is a country. Svenska is a language. Don't know if that was meant as a joke but I wanted to inform you anyway.

I drink Svedka often enough that I should thank Sweden.

Actually, anniversaries like this remind me it's weird how young many countries are. Still an honest milestone thing to celebrate, unlike many US holidays.

1. That's not the anthem. As a matter of fact, we do not have one. - Swedes claim that it is "Du gamla, du fria" ("You Old, You Free" (lit.)) which was written by Richard Dybeck 1844 which is not true. I don't know why they think that it is, but it is not.

The plain and simple fact is that we do not have an official one. Du gamla, du fria is merely claimed to be, and is made no more official just because it is being claimed to be.

2. Other interesting facts are: Sweden is seen as a christian "country" from especially Americans for some reason. The fact cannot be any further away from that assumption.

Sweden is overwhelmingly Atheistic (over 85% according to Gallup) and secular, which of course is awesome. How the Americans fail to look that up is quite beyond me.

The only cultural value we have, is a dance where we pretend to be frogs, jumping around a flowery pole at midsummer singing "små grodorna" (little fucking frogs). (See below.)

I seriously doubt that, in Denmark one out of three consider themselves Atheists, and I can't imagine there being such a wast difference. Of course only around 20% truly see themselves as Christians with all the dogma that entails. The rest are mixture between other religions, agnostics and "casual" Christians, who do consider themselves Christians, but without it actually affecting their lives in any meaningful way. I would say some of these 60% are technically Atheists, but just haven't really made any conscious decision about it. In any case, no where near 80%.

I guess you meant Happy Anniversary to modern Sweden, because "Sweden" as a country has been around for way longer than 491 years.

No celebration? What are you talking about? I went to my mothers place and had a rainy and cold BBQ feast... it was actually a great time.
