Tales of Vesperia is a Japanese Role-Playing game and the latest entry into the ''Tales of'' action/RPG franchise.
Overview
Tales of Vesperia is a Japanese Role-Playing game from Namco Tales Studio. It stars the Yuri Lowell as the primary Protagonist. Yuri is an Ex-knight of the strong but somewhat oppressive Empire who now spends his life living in the lower quarter of the capital, usually getting on the wrong side of the Knights during his crusade to helping the poor and proving their value is as important as the Nobles.Along with a substantial cast of characters, the players are immersed once more in a world of magic, elemental spirits and a cell shaded anime style presentation.
Story
The people of Terca Lumireis rely on Blastia, which are a form of technology made by inscribing a "Formula" on a blastia "Core". The people use these blastia to carry out different things that go on in their daily life. Cities use the blastia to draw water from the ground or to create fire from a stone. The knights and guilds of the land use blastia to carry out the sole duty to kill monsters that attack citizens. Blastia have been used to create barriers protecting these cities from impending monster attacks; however, they have kept most people from travelling outside the barriers to see distant lands. Yuri Lowell has always dreamt of going outside of the barriers, longing for a journey of his own and the ability to explore the world like his childhood friend Flynn Scifo. Flynn works for the capital as a knight and is able to move outside of the barrier in order to subdue disturbances. Yuri used to uphold these ideals but soon quit because of the way the government forced their ideals on to the people. The blastia that was regulating the water supply was stolen from the lower quarters, and Yuri takes matters in his own hands, only to be thrown into jail. There he encounters Estellise, the heroine of the game. This is where their journey begins. Yuri then starts up his own guild, Brave Vesperia, to serve the poor and use his own sense of justice.
Characters
Yuri Lowell: The protagonist of the story, Yuri and wields a single sword in battle which can be seen dangling from his hand. Whenever he readies for battle, he tosses the sheath aside and throws the sword into his hand in an upright position. Because he grew up in the lower quarter as a relatively poor boy, he perceives the government to be corrupt and egotistical so he then makes his own guild to uphold justice the way he believes it should be done. Throughout the game it is often conveyed that Yuri will do what nobody else wants to for the good of the people. Yuri's attacks are similar to Lloyd's moves, although they are not quite as fast or with as many hits because Lloyd was a reckless dual-wielder. His personality is more calm and mature than previous protagonists in the Tales series.
Estellise: The heroine of Vesperia that is able to use rapiers and staves. Yuri spontaneously gave her the nickname "Estelle" while talking to her when they first met, and she adopted it as her usual name. She is probably most similar to Colette Brunel who was the heroine in Tales of Symphonia; unlike Colette, she is a prominent healer and the main healer of the party. She has similar attacks and personality as Colette Brunel, the heroine of Tales of Symphonia, such as Pow Hammer and other light-based attacks. She lived a sheltered lifestyle until she met Yuri and chased after Flynn with him, worrying for his safety.
Flynn Scifo: A knight that wields both a sword and a shield and childhood friend of Yuri Lowell. He grew up in the lower quarter like Yuri did, and has problems with the Empire as well but instead attempts to fix the broken system by becoming one of its leaders. After Yuri had left the knights, Flynn gained many achievements as well as being promoted. Since Flynn is a knight he is able to travel outside the barriers to fend off monsters, which makes Yuri envious. Flynn has short blonde hair as well as blue eyes (Note: that he is voiced in English by Sam Riegel a voice which is commonly known in Fate Stay Night as Emiya and as Alegretto in Eternal Sonata). While Flynn is playable, it is only for a very short segment during a battle defending a camp from a horde of monsters along with Yuri and Repede. He is slated to appear as a primary playable character however, in the ps3 version.
Repede: Yuri's faithful dog who often accompanies Yuri to places and helps him fight with a dagger in his paws. He holds a pipe in his mouth which is from his old master. He is not very friendly with people other than Yuri in general, and at times it seems as though he and Yuri can communicate directly.
Rita Mordio: Rita is a magic user, using blastia to attack her enemies and uses a sort of ribbon weapon to attack nearby foes. She is a researcher the studies blastia and hates to be bothered during her research. She is not typically the most friendly of people and dosen't get along very well with others (also noted that she is played by the voice of Rukia Kuchiki).
Kar ol Capel: A young boy that wields a giant hammer (similar to Presea, a character from the game Tales of Symphonia, that wields a giant axe and is also small) He says that he is from the Hunting Blades Guild and acompanies Yuri on his journy for an unknown reason.
"Raven": A strange old man who begins following the party around, at first without any consent. He is a jokester, a troublemaker, and the archetypal perverted old man character. He introduces himself by saying that Raven will be good enough. Fights with a bow and a dagger.
Judith: A mysterious woman of the wise, reclusive race Kritya who fights with a spear. She joins the party after a chance meeting with Yuri, and her background is it at first a mystery to the party.
Gameplay
Tales of Vesperia uses an improved version of the Tales of Abyss system which is now called the Evolved Flex-Range Linear Motion Battle System. Also returning from Tales of Symphonia and Tales of Abyss is the ability to activate an over-limit ability enabling the person to continually slash an opponent as well as pull off a effective special attack which can be stacked in a single bar or spread out to different members of the party. When stacked it can be put up to 4 times giving various effects (To see more look at the Linear Motion Battle System in concepts).Tales of Vesperia will also be using something different to GRADE points from other Tales games, Instead each member will have "Learning Points" or LP. Through fighting battles you will gain more LP points and putting them to unlearned skills and when enough of the points are required the skill is unlocked and can use it without having a type of weapon equipped for a certain number of "Skill Points" or SP. SP points are gained by leveling up from experience and a character with a certain skill to that weapon enabling to use that skill (The demo of this game only gives a set number of 20 SP points), Skill Changes are also enabled in the interface for the character enabailing to switch up different skills to different enemies, if an enemy has a high knockback attack a player will enable to use a skill such as "Quick Recover" so the user is able to jump back up after being knocked down, through using the skill change enough times, you will eventually learn that Arte or spell.
Burst Artes are performed while in overlimit by using an arcane arte or a spell change. Depending on the overlimit level, the amount of time it takes increases allowing you to add more combo's and string together more powerful techniques. A player will also be able to make use of the "Fatal strike" system, being able to kill an enemy in one blow with just one swing of the weapon by a button combination.
