Overview
Tao Taido (stylized as Ta•o Taido) is a 2D fighting game developed and released by Video System (and released in the U.S.A. by McO'River) for arcades in April 1993.
The sole fighting game by developer Video System, Tao Taido chronicles eight martial artists as they fight to unlock the secrets of the mysterious martial art of the same name. Unlike other fighting games of the time, the game uses both a unique special move system (where players must charge their special move by holding down both attack buttons, leaving themselves vulnerable, and then tapping the joystick in a direction) and an optional setting that allows players to "buy-in" more health with credits (similar to Gauntlet).
It also features a single-round multiple-lifebar system (later used in the Killer Instinct series and Vampire Savior: The Lord of Vampire) and the ability for a second player to join in the middle of a single-player fight for a three-way match (similar to the original Fatal Fury). Later revisions of the game change the controls to one of two variations: a three-button setup (where the third button is used for charging special moves) and a six-button setup (with traditional motions for special moves).
Characters
The game has eight total playable characters to choose from and one unplayable boss. Similar to Street Fighter II: The World Warrior, both players cannot choose the same character. If a player joins in the middle of another player's match against the computer, that player cannot also choose the same character as the computer.
