Capcom announces a new entry into their famous crossover "VS" series of games. This time the Capcom favorites do battle with characters from the famous Japanese animation house Tatsunoko Productions.

Overview

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All Stars is a fighting game developed by Capcom. It is known that like the previous Capcom developed "VS" games it remains in 2D, and offers tag team based gameplay. Unlike the previous VS games, TvC uses a four-button setup compared to six buttons with three buttons as light, medium, and heavy attacks (no punch or kick variety) along with the fourth button for tags and assists. Using variations of those buttons allow for more technical abilities from previous VS games like the double team super move, assists, advanced block, and mega crashes. The standard array of modes like most fighting games are here with a 7-stage arcade mode against the computer A.I., versus mode with up to two players, training mode, Wii-exclusive mini-games that utilize the Wii Remote, and an in-game shop where you spend Zennies to buy four more characters, stages, background music, and art for the game. A TvC branded arcade stick is also available at Japan for release for the pure fighting game experience even though WiiMote/Nunchuk combo, Classic Controller, and the GameCube controller also work. Other arcade sticks can also work like the Hori Wii-specific arcade stick and converters to use other sticks from other systems.

In May 2009 the June issue of NIntendo Power leaked revealing that TvC would also be coming to the US. In the article Ryota Niitsuma the producer of the game talked about how the game will be renamed Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars for its US release that new features and characters will be in the US release also talking about an online mode. Some days later Capcom confirmed the news on their blog saying that it was one of their two big mystery announcements for E3 2009. Some days later also on their blog Capcom confirmed that the game would be coming out in Euope.

A press release issued by Capcom on June 2 confirmed the aforementioned online play and revealed that five new characters would be included in the Western release. Due to copyright reasons, one Tatsunoko character has been removed from the roster ( Hakushon Daimaou). However, the next day Capcom replaced this press release with a much more ambiguous one, claiming the previous release was "incorrect."

In September, it was announced that Ultimate All-Stars would receive a Japanese release, officially making it a revision of Cross Generation of Heroes instead of simply a localization. Famitsu soon after revealed the first new character: Tekkaman Blade

The Japanese website was updated soon after Tekkaman Blade's reveal, but curious visitors discovered that careless coding had revealed the remainder of the roster: Joe the Condor (Science Ninja Team Gatchaman), Yatterman-2 (Yatterman), Frank West (Dead Rising) and Zero (Mega Man X or Mega Man Zero). The website was reworked to remove the offending coding and Capcom has issued a "no comment" regarding the news, but with Frank's reveal at TGS 2009, many believe the leak to be true.

The game will release on the same week in all regions: January 26, 2010 in North America, January 28, 2010 in Japan, and January 29, 2010 in Europe.

Gameplay

work in progress

  • How the translation from 6 attack buttons to 3 works
(no info)

  • Super Jumps
TvsC allows the player to do a special super jump along with the double and triple jumps the characters can do, the super jump propels your character to a height even greater than the triple jump almost instantaneously, these super jumps are mainly for evading non defendable super attacks at close range and are executed by doing down and then up.

  • The different indicators
There are two distinct bars in TvsC, a heath bar and a super bar. The health bar has actually 2 colors, yellow the actual life bar and red the "energy" bar. If a character is damaged and the player decides to switch the character on screen the hurt character that is on hold will slowly recover the energy zone of his heath zone with actual health, most of the attacks do less energy damage than health damage. The red zone is also used for"baroque" which is detailed somewhat further on.
The second indicator bar in the game is the super bar that stocks up up to 5 units of it and that fills when you do or receive damage.

  • Assists an tag gameplay
The fourth button used in TvsC is the assist button, by pressing it once the character that is on the "bench" will pop up and perform a special attack. By pressing the assist and back button on the same time the two characters will switch places on the battle field the character that now is on the bench slowly regaining its red energy.

  • Push Blocks and counters
When a opponent is about to hit you and you press attack towards your character will perform a "push block". A push block is a move that not only blocks the enemies attack put also stuns them for a short period giving the player the opportunity to counter attack without risk.

  • Defending
In TvT you hold the opposite direction of your opponent to defend attacks but you will still receive some chip damage with a certain number of the attacks and especially with the supers. It is also possible to defend whilst airborne.

  • Dashing
TvT lets the player dash for a small distances to close up the gap between the player and the opponent by double tapping the direction in which the player wants to dash. Aerial dashing is also possible.

  • Baroque (temp power boost)
Baroque is a technique that implies of hitting the tag and one of the attack buttons at the same time, if done correctly the player's red energy will be drained and depending on the amount of red energy sacrificed by the player the length of the magnitude of the power boost will be altered.

  • Mega Clash
By pressing the 3 attack buttons and the tag button it is possible to trigger a mega clash, a mega clash can be executed whilst being combod on and send the opponent off to the other side of the screen. The mega clash move does however consume one bar of the super meter.

  • Special attacks and their variations
Special attacks are executed by doing a d-pad motion followed by the light, medium or heavy attack button. However depending on which of the three attack buttons you used for to end your special attack with the special attack will vary in speed, direction, or force. An example is Ryu's shoryuken his iconic jumping uppercut, when finishing it with the light attack button the animation will charge quick and his uppercut will reach about the same height that it does in the Street Fighter series, if however the player ends the same special attack with the heavy attack Ryu's shoryuken will take somewhat longer to charge but will reach twice the height of the light shoryuken. Most of the special attacks in TvsC are variable.

  • Super attacks
Ryu doing his Super projectile attack
Ryu doing his Super projectile attack
Super attacks are based upon the characters special attacks and consume one to three units of the super attack meter depending of the attack, they are performed by doing the special attack its D-pad code and ending it with two attack buttons. Super attacks come in three different types:
Projectile: Projectile Supers usually are blockable and do the less damage Zone: Zone supers like projectile supers are still blockable but do somewhat more damage. Hit: Hit supers require the player to time it so that it hit the opponent the first second. if missed the super will have failed. Hit supers do the most damage.
Some of the supers can be executed whilst the character is airborne.
