This year's Halloween event is boooooooooooring

#1 Posted by dudeglove (7684 posts) -

Forgetting about the dumb new hats...

...and miscellaneous item sets...

...This year's Halloween event is pretty weak sauce compared to the Horseless Headless Horsemann of yesteryear. The new "boss" Monoculus isn't even that much of a threat compared to the axe wielding jerk, who randomly tags someone as "it" and chases after your ass unless you tag someone else (or get your head chopped off). Monoculus just sort of... floats there o_o

Not to mention the fact that the KOTH level you encounter him on (basically Viaduct with knobs on) isn't exactly an exciting map either. Worse of all is that, as you see in the above video, nearly everyone is playing scout just to get up to the portals he leaves behind, rather than attempting to actually kill him. I was fortunate enough to waltz into a server to find everyone going after his ass and got the two new achievements tout suite.

Anyone else feel the same "meh" about it as me? Or am I just a grumbling old fart who doesn't like fun?

That Medic hat is fucking glorious if you ask me. To each his own, I suppose.

It's this year's novelty hat; anyone can wear the monoculus. Not as good as the pumpkin hat to be honest

That pumpkin hat was pretty great. I actually logged on after seeing this thread to see that I had unlocked both of the new Pyro hats (which never EVER happens to me) and I love both of them.

It's pretty fucking weak, the worst part is you can't wear any of the sets outside of full moons despite some of them being the most incredible fucking shit ever.

Just like every other halloween hat?

I pretty much got the achievements on the 2nd day, which is great since I don't like the Viaduct map at all. I'm not that impressed this year, at least compared to the previous Halloween events which were awesome.

I don't know, I still haven't managed to get either of the Eye-chievements. It's basically one team trying to kill the Monoculus and the other taking advantage of that and instead helping fight the greater threat they just kill players. So Monuculus hasn't been killed once when I was playing... So yeah, not all that great.

Did you really just say weak sauce?

It's the hot new jam.

@dudeglove: Only in Moscow.

People still play TF2? I'm genuinely surprised. I always though Valve releasing it as F2P meant they were putting it out to pasture.

That's the exact opposite of what they did.

And it's been open season on newcomers ever since. 17 backstabs later and it still doesn't get old.

Wait, is it jam, or sauce? It can't be both, jauce isn't something you should eat. Then you'd be a jaucer.

Anyway, the word I've been using for the 'ween stuff is "bonkers". Largely because of the scout and tag issues you mentioned.

Although I'm curious to make it to the skull cave at the end...

#16 Posted by RsistncE (4496 posts) -

I agree. Last years was awesome with the entirely brand new halloween themed map, along with the boss. This years is pretty meh.

#17 Posted by valrog (3671 posts) -

@Brackynews: Apparently you have to kill the Monoculus and enter the portal he leaves behind to reach the skull. Which rarely happens because people just don't put any effort into killing him...

The other Halloween hats were garbage. Some of these have full set effects, and a lot of them were made by the community. Not only will no one ever see them but they aren't going to see money for them either.

I got damn lucky with Monoculus today. Some guy took him down and three of us jumped into the resulting portal. One of the guys disappeared while the other run to the skull before I could trudge my way up the steps. He just stood around when he got there as he was unsure what to do. I took the initiative and just jumped onto the book and bagged myself a pretty handy achievement.

I don't have any of the gear from the last year's event, took a long break from TF2 around the time the Mann.Co stuff hit. It's been a bit of a scramble trying to get all the stuff in the event, may collection needs must be met.

Only way to survive is to be a Sniper or Scout on the map

I only got to beat him because I was in a server that was made to beat him with god mode on

#21 Edited by Brackynews (4045 posts) -

@valrog: Yeah I managed to get the achievement & hat for killing it, but it wasn't at an altitude where I could get to the portal. I think a scout would've needed the triple jump. It's not a good map for maneuverability whatsoever. It's a good map for GET THE FUCK BEHIND COVER OH GOD THERES ANOTHER IT ONESHOTTED ME. :P

I like the paper bag hats, but I'd rather have last year's jackolantern. Tradeable?? ;)

#22 Posted by SSully (4125 posts) -

@valrog: Yeah I did see that as a problem, and I wont lie, I did it a few times myself. I played a few games where Mono did get killed, and I also found a server where they banned people who attacked other players while mono was alive, so he was killed plenty when I played there.

Overall I liked the event, but a more original map would have been better.

I enjoy that my Ghastly Gibus from the first event is now the Ghastlierest Gibus

Achievement only, but you can still get it - you just have to be (I think) one of the last three people to do damage to the Horsemann. It's not hard to get, because the Horsemann is more of a threat to everyone and both teams equally want to get rid of him. For the haunted scrap you need to kill him with a melee attack.

Monoculus, on the other hand, is only around for 90 seconds before warping away for another minute or so. While he's present, the capture point is locked, so you either have to try to kill him, or play scout and abuse the portals to get the mega buff to go around picking off anybody trying to kill him. Or just, y'know, hang out in the spawn.

This!

I dunno. I'm a gigantic fan of TF2's previous Halloween events. Though, this one feels a little anemic compared to the sprawl of Mann Manor. I think that perhaps has more to do with the map type choice. Going back to Harvest after playing Mann Manor gave me the same feeling, too. Maybe this is an indication of a pattern for Valve. Alternating between dressing up older KOTH maps and creating a more intensive map design.

Though, I guess they did have to create all that underworld stuff. That couldn't have been easy.

#27 Posted by ajamafalous (11845 posts) -

Totally agree.

Also, I got both achievements the first time I fought Monoculus.

Probably just gonna end up buying all the costumes; played for a bit this weekend but I don't have the patience to farm random gift spawns to get everything like I did last year.

#28 Posted by crazyleaves (639 posts) -

Yeah it's pretty easy to get the new achievements just find a server that isn't full of tools. I like viaduct so this map is pretty cool but the event does seem lacking for some reason. I got the book as a pyro which was perfect because 3 Scouts from the other team were there with me. Those suckas got roasted.

#29 Posted by Robin_Gr (137 posts) -

There is nothing really new of substance, I think thats why I don't really care. They went overboard on cosmetics but no new weapons, maps or mechanics. The first year had the exploding pumpkins and ghosts. Last year it was at least interesting to have the horseman acting like a 3rd team in the middle of the chaos. Its kind of just recycled this year so it doesn't have the same impact. And the eyeball just spams rockets and teleports, not even as much fun to fight. The way gifts are handled is a bit of a misstep too. As soon as you hear the noise people go running. You could be capping the point in overtime with your team, when that message pops up you will be left alone while they all crouch on some spot in the corner of the map waiting for it to materialise. And for what? Some random cosmetic item thats just going to clog up your inventory the rest of the year.

As someone who considers KotH to be his least favorite mode in TF2 by a wide margin, I have to agree. Whereas Mann Manor is a genuinely exciting map, this one just kind of devolves into people rushing through the portals over and over again.

#31 Posted by AtomicTonic (8 posts) -

I must be in the minority because I like KotH in TF2. The matches are quick and the maps are smaller and more chaotic. I loved playing soldier on Eyeaduct, because every five seconds you get kritzed or ubered or BOTH. Then again I rarely take the game seriously and I like dumb maps in between the standard ones.

Actually I think that around Halloween TF2 almost turns into an MMO for a couple weeks. You have clashing factions, crazy buffs, a boss monster raid, loot, and even loot with big purple text. That's the spookiest costume of all!

If they somehow made a Halloween payload map I would be all over it. Like if the nuke was actually one of those ghostbuster traps that you have to keep under wraps by escorting it, and if left too long the thing turns into a giant shark monster that rampages about before sucking it back into the trap - though it would be a nightmare trying to figure out the AI on that one, and actually making it balanced too.
