Would you trust these turtles with your children?

Look, the idea of Rocksteady Studios applying their expertise to a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game remains a really great good idea. I mean, hell, the series has a character named Rocksteady.

Besides the fact that it doesn’t make any sense given how the licensing works out, it appears another company is already in cahoots with the turtles: Activision.

TMNT fansite Ninja Pizza (which is a really great name for a TMNT fansite, by the way) went through a series of photos taken by ToyArk from the ongoing Toy Fair in New York and noticed Activision was mentioned as a partner for TMNT in 2012.

In my dreams, though, Rocksteady is still making that game.

Yeah, at least they got the name to back it. But when was TMNT last popular?..

aww

#4 Posted by Moncole (636 posts) -

I think this is good. Activsion has a lot of good devs to make it.

So does that mean that the turtles will be enjoying cool, refreshing Coca-Cola products with every pizza?

It was the best great good idea ever!

Wait, when did Activision get the TMNT game rights? Last I heard, Ubisoft had them.

They lost 'em.

I miss the TMNT and would love a new game. Preferably not a remake or rehash of every other TMNT game.

So it would seem. Here's hoping Activision does better with it than Ubi did (but considering how they've handled the Bond license so far, that probably won't be happening!).

this game will suck

#13 Posted by KaneRobot (1416 posts) -

Mildly interested but it's going to take a pretty solid game to get me to come back after the disappointment of how TMNT ReShelled turned out. Hopefully Activision can do better.

In the meantime I'll just keep bumpin' this song by the TMNT band.

that's also why the TMNT NES game has been pulled from virtual console this week. konami's license for the old stuff expired as well.

digital distribution definitely is NOT the best way for the industry to go :/

How about Ninja Turtle Skylanders... I would buy those toys!

#17 Posted by blueduck (964 posts) -

Well there goes that game.

If Rocksteady woulda made a TMNT game it would have just been a reskinned Arkham game. Boooring!

#19 Posted by WJist (313 posts) -

So I am a sucker for TMNT-related properties, being a child growing up during the age of 90's cartoons....

#20 Posted by ProfessorEss (7278 posts) -

Bummer. Rocksteady seemed like a pretty solid fit.

Give it to Raven? They go up and down but there is potential there.

#21 Posted by LiQuid3600 (144 posts) -

@WJist: Same! Sucks being a TMNT mega fan and not having a good video game representation of it.

I understand where you're coming from but that's pretty quick to judge (granted, I'm kind of judging too quickly in the opposite direction)

Batman plays like Batman because thet's how Batman plays. I'm inclined to believe they would've built a totally different game to try to capture the speed and teamwork that's core to the Turtles - hopefully to the same degree they captured the pace and methodicalness (methodicalness?) of Batman.

I have more faith in activision then i do ubi, what i don't have faith in a game based on a TV show, which this game looks to be based on.

Especially when the show itself looks absolutely terrible, and this is coming from a turtle fanatic, who has been a fanatic for over 20 years. The style they are going with is absolutely terrible. But.. i do applaud them for doing classic turtle figures, i will most defiantly buy those up, i just hope they allow NECA to do more turtle stuff.

I was actually amazed anyone took the Rocksteady rumor serious and didn't get the joke.

It was so delightful a rumour that I could not help but convince myself that it had to be true.

So we can assume this will be a new annualized franchise? TMNT: The Call of Pizza?

#27 Posted by TournamentOfHate (386 posts) -

I watched the 1st live action TMNT movie a few months ago with a couple friends and that movie is still so awesome.

PIZZA TIME!

#29 Posted by Napalm (9020 posts) -

I never played the original TMNT game(s) so I have absolutely no affinity for the series. I did like the live action movies, though. I mean, Kevin Nash as Super Shredder!

#30 Posted by Nakiro (77 posts) -

I would rather Rocksteady develop.

Wise man say...never pay full price for late pizza (or terrible TMNT games).

#33 Posted by sethshandor (81 posts) -

I just want a survival horror Gremlins game... and a Telltale Quantum Leap game!

#34 Posted by Tebbit (4449 posts) -

While my love of the original series knows no bounds, pretty much everything out of TMNT in the last decade has been... Mediocre at best.

I guess I want to give Activision the benefit of the doubt.

#35 Posted by UltimAXE (368 posts) -

@Tebbit: Nostalgia will do that to you. The 4Kids TMNT cartoon is on a completely higher level than the original cartoon, and the Turtles Forever film was an amazing send off to both eras. I think that any turtles fan who feels the same as you should at the very least seek out the latter.

As for the topic at hand: boo. I sense Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 with a TMNT motif coming on. Please shock me and pump out something awesome instead.

Call of Duty: Cartoon Warfare SHELL SHOCKED

#38 Posted by cooljammer00 (1528 posts) -

I remember the Rocksteady rumor being plausible because of all the non-lethal fighting and gadgets that the Turtles in a Half Shell use.

Oh well, more licensed dreck from Activision.

@LiQuid3600:

You mean a good modern game, right?

Turtles in Time is still pretty great. The SNES version, not the remake.

#40 Edited by vinsanityv22 (1064 posts) -

Hmmm.,...good news? It depends on who Activision puts on the job. Amongst their non-Call of Duty studios, they have Skylanders' Toys for Bob (that would be good), Vicarious Visions (could go either way), Spiderman's Beenox, High Moon Studios (that would be AMAZING), and...uh...Neversoft. If they're still around - they haven't done anything since Bobby Kotick forced them to ram Guitar Hero into the ground. Raven could also probably do a great job, if they worked off their Wolverine engine...but I'm 100% certain they're in "forced labor mode", cranking out shit for Call of Duty map packs or who-gives-a-fuck. I fucking can't stand COD.

Here's hoping we get a great game out of this. Any of those studios SHOULD be able to knock out a great, new TMNT game based on Nickelodeon's new series.

But man, a Skylanders approach - using a "Pizza of Power" pedestal (I'm calling the name, right there) - is already hurting my wallet. It would totally make sense though. I'm surprised Activision hasn't ordered High Moon to include that functionality for Transformers already...

#41 Posted by groundbeef (63 posts) -

God dammit... the possibility of Rocksteady reviving the Turtles hadn't even crossed my mind until reading this, now I could not be more disappointed. All in the span of the 10 seconds it took to read the friggin article. Thanks Patrick.

If the Activision/toyline connection is true, I don't see how this wouldn't end up going the Skylanders route. Which means they'll have to cram in as many playable characters as possible, which means it'll most likely end up being another 2D fighter like Smash Up or something. Thanks Patrick.

In other "wouldn't that be great" ideas, Nolan North should totally make the next TMNT movie.

#43 Posted by Deranged (1837 posts) -

FUUUUUUU....

Footage or GTFO.

#44 Posted by stokely3 (6 posts) -

Hmm, i feel disappointed about this news.

#45 Posted by Zacagawea (1580 posts) -

Such a bummer.

#46 Posted by Tebbit (4449 posts) -

@UltimAXE: Wow, I didn't even know that movie existed. I'll definitely check into it. And you're right, that 4Kids TMNT was totally OK, I think by the time that came around I had just stopped being so heavily influenced by cartoons, so it didn't impact me like the original series did.

#47 Posted by ildon (357 posts) -

Hoping for TMNT Skylanders.

#48 Posted by Butano (1728 posts) -

If Rocksteady made a TMNT game that was basically a 4-player co-op Batman AA/AC, I'd buy 4 copies for myself in a heartbeat.

#49 Posted by Evercaptor (391 posts) -

Give it to Treyarch, see what they can do with the licence.

#50 Posted by revel (86 posts) -

Damn and my hopes were really high too! Really high...

But not anymore. Bobby Kotick will take one look at the game and go "I don't get it" and then he'll throw left overs from 6 various companies of which 1 has made a solid real game at it all at once while trying to shoe horn in "Picatinny Rails", 15 Hours of Quick Time Cinematics, and 45 physics driven normal mapped american flags before they just up and cancel the whole thing entirely.

Allow me to exhale.
