By Far The Best SNES RPG There Is

I was fortunate enough to play Terranigma back in the day when it was first released in Europe for the SNES in 1996. At that point I had already played the remarkable SNES adaption of the NES classic Zelda and later on played through Seceret of Mana and Secret of Evermore but what I got when I first fired up my console to play Terranigma was more than unexpected.
Terranigma starts off in a small village named Crysta which is located somewhere beneath the surface in some kind of shadow world. At the beginning of the game the hero of the story opens a locked door which leads him to a cellar in which a mysterious chest is stored, which is calling for him. Upon touching the chest its seal is broken and everyone in the village freezes, except for the elder of the town who will more or less guide you through the game.
Now your goal is to unfreeze your fellow townsmen by resurrecting the earth's continents. But after you are done with that the real game starts. You have to bring life back to our blue planet and you can only do that by traveling to the surface. During the game you will bring back flowers, animals and humans. After that you will have to help humans to evolve by contributing to scientific experiments and striving for technological advances.
There are plot twists, moral lectures and social lessons embedded in the story which will seem strange at times (at one point the character dies and is reborn) but made the game even better for me.
To give you a real indication on why I love the game so much I wanna share the most impressive moments of the game with you.
There is a scene in the game where you will find yourself looking for a little girl who is sad about her parents' deaths and ran away. You will follow her to a village where people are quite nice to you and sooner or later you will go to the local INN to take a nap. After you wake up you will find yourself in a town that has been abandoned a long time ago and you are surrounded by zombies who are after your brains. Later on you will find out that you are actually in the town the girl used to live in with her parents and that the town was destroyed by monsters. That was an incredible moment in the game for me.
But I also loved the fact that you could see the world flourish in all its beauty and madness that is connected with technological advances. You can see people caging the birds you once brought back to the planet and animals behaving more and more suspicious towards humans as the game goes on. On the technological side you are present when the first plane is build, the first phone is assembled and the first photo is shot. Towards the end of the game you can even buy an apartment and buy furniture for it.
In the other review I read that the duder had problems finding is way around the map but for me that problem wasn't really existent. As at least the German version came packed with an official game guide you never got lost in the game. And as for the difficulty of the game: there were two battles in the game that required a bit of preparation - meaning leveling up your character which isn't that much for an rpg. It took me roughly an hour to get to the required level.
I don't know if I can recommend going back to the game after such a long time. As someone who played the game during his early childhood it's awesome for me no matter when I play it. I guess it could work for someone who hasn't played the game, too if you put the game on one of your hacked PSP :-P. Guess that's all the PSP ever was to me, a portable SNES. I am confident it's possible to enjoy the game just like I did when I first picked it up.

Truly one of the best Games not relased in the United States.  Theire are 3 ways to play this game: 1  Buy an import SFC system and buy the Import game on ebay along with it (Of course the game would be in Japanese), 2 Buy the UK Version and Get the SNES GameGenie and play it on a US SNES (Of course the game will cost you way more money for this edition and is also hard to obtain, and also you will have to remove the Front tab from the Game Geni unit to fit it.. not a bad option), and of course ...
