Digging Terraria
After seeing the Quick Look for Terraria (helpfully linked to here) and seeing it going for a song on Steam,I figured I'd give it a try and see whether it was worth the fuss.Turns out,it's well worth the price of purchase.Though it throws you right in the middle of things practically blind, deaf, and dumb, your abandonment in unknown lands actually turns out to aid in the appeal to the game. That lack of knowledge breeds interest and curiosity, which naturally progresses to invention, innovation, and creative thought. When that takes its turn to discovery,it leads to what I feel is one of the best aspects of the game aside from its atmosphere and ambiance, one which I dare say is nearly impossible to find in most games of this age.Without the game holding your hand, and left to your own wits and means, the reward becomes more valuable due to the risk, difficulty, and prior lack of knowledge. This subsequently gives a desire to dig even deeper(pardon the pun)into the unknown depths, both of the world and the game itself,in order to seek more discoveries and satiate one's creative desires. It's been said that Terraria is much like a 2D Minecraft. While I couldn't argue against that point,I'd state that it actually provides the game more charm, more personality. While the flat squares of the sprites are very similar in concept to the cubes and pixels of the latter's world,it seems to pull together more,a painting to be hung from a wall in an art gallery alongside Minecraft's sculpture in the middle of the room. Both at their best can border on surreal beauty, and to detract either would be a disservice.
In conclusion, for the cost, gameplay, and simple joy and fun it provides,Terraria is a gem that I'd highly recommend purchasing.
