Tess is Joel's partner in crime in the post-apocalyptic world of The Last of Us. Together, they smuggle all sorts of goods to and fro the various quarantine zones in the US. She possesses the skills and the mindset needed to survive the dangers within and without the city walls. Her life as a smuggler provides her connections to different factions and individuals.
Once she has set her mind on something, there is no stopping her. Her survivalist mentality hides a longing for a better way of living, as evidenced by her willingness to take on Marlene's mission despite Joel's protestations.
