    Tetris

    Franchise »

Quite possibly the most popular puzzle game in the world, Tetris, created by Alexy Pajitnov, has seen releases on just about every platform imaginable.

Why is there no Tetris RPG? You know, like Puzzle Quest?

Think about it. Puzzle Quest took Bejeweled and interconnected it with an RPG. I don't see why it wouldn't work with Tetris as well.

I'll make it myself if that's what it takes to convince everyone! Just give me a few years.

Because Puzzle Quest was actually designed like an RPG? And Tetris wasn't?

You misunderstood me. I'm talking about Tetris + RPG, instead of of Bejeweled + RPG (which is Puzzle Quest).

Because Tetris is like the Great white shark. It started out so perfect that it doesn't need to change.

Alright, see: No one seems to be stoked about my idea (except imsh_pl).

This means i'll have to make the damn game myself, to show ya'll how awesome this idea is. Just you wait!

Only if it involved the Russians building the Berlin Wall. You know, with Tetris blocks. No, a better idea would be you playing as MacGyver as he tears down the the Berlin Wall by creating lines. Or not.

bejewelled has more scoring possibilities. Puzzle Quest has different coloured gems that you match to give you different mana types, skulls to match for basic attacks, spells to use based on those different mana types. Tetris you'd just complete lines to attack, even if the different bricks that made up the line resulted in different mana types it would be more luck based and would just depend on what bricks had been dumped where to make up the line instead of choosing which colour to match, depending on what mana type you needed, how that match would affect the game board, if you should go for what you need or to deny your opponent what they need etc. Plus how would you turn-base tetris, which also helps with the rpg feel, you'd just have to do two tetris games at a time which would just turn it into something more like puzzle fighter.

In short more options/strategy is available to think through in bejewelled, whilst in tetris no matter what you'd just clear lines fast.

The Tetris Company which holds the copyrights to Tetris is supposedly difficult to work with and they sue any unlicensed tetromino-based games out of existence.

    @Phr4nk0:

I see what you're saying, and it's interesting. It would definitely be a challenge to figure out how make it interesting in the ways Puzzle Quest is. But i think it can be done.

There can be more to Tetris than just clearing lines fast. One example: Tetris DS has this mission mode, where it gives you specific goals that need to be completed in order to score. It makes you play differently from normal Tetris.

Oh man I'd love a Puzzle Quest-like Tetris game. I have no idea how such a game would be structured, but I like playing straight Tetris, so even just having some level up mechanic added would make me interested. I don't need an excuse to play Tetris, but any kind of motivator other than score would be great.

Hey guys. guess WHAT???!!! OP's idea is REAL!!! EA Made a game called Tetris RPG, described by someone as "Puzzle and Dragons with Tetris." Only problem: It's released in Japan only, so you'll have to temporarily switch to the Japanese app store to download it. Even then, you probably won't be able to read it. There may be JUST enough English to get what's going on though. Maybe.
    But hey, it's real!

I'd play it, but only if each individual block was a complex character with a deep backstory revealed through side-mission mini-games that increase the player's affinity with that block, as well as enabling potential romance.

Oh, and there'd have to be loot.

    ...

Seriously, though, it's a rad idea. Add RPG elements to anything, and you've almost immediately sold me. I'm such a sucker for that.
