Not even a wannabe poker player should play this
Texas Hold'em Tournament plays too easy for anybody including beginners to poker. Not to mention, it's way of presenting the game hardly shames the Nintendo 64.
Texas Hold'em Tournament is one of the few poker titles available on the Wii Shop Channel. It is just flat out horrible. The game looks bad, plays bad, and feels bad, and nothing makes up for the $5 price tag.
There isn't much to say about what's going on because the title gives a nice summary. You are playing Texas Hold'em the entire game. There are ultimatley two modes. You can play for fun, which means it's just a game and it doesn't actually cost to play. Or you can go into the Tournament. The Tournaments all have a buy-in which means you must pay to play. There are 5 different casinos to play in, 4 of which must be unlocked by completing tournaments. If you win the tournament, you win money, the amount of which depends on which casino you played in. If you lose, you of course don't get your buy-in back, so there is an option to borrow money if you run out. If you borrow money, you will lose any clothes you bought and your clothes will go back to the defualt ones. Yeah, you can buy clothes in it. But the clothes are so poorly designed and looks so bad on the Miis you might want to think twice.
Playing the game isn't very tough. The AI seems so dumb and will almost always fold. Also, the cards seem to be more preset than random, which then goes back to problems with the AI. The AI will almost always fold, but if it knows it has a good hand, it will keep on playing, which makes it harder on you to decide to fold or keep on going, because when the computer players actually go all the way, they almost always win, while you curse and scream because you never had a chance. Another problem is that just raising the pot will have other players fold, which is pretty lame.
In addition to doing this local, you also have all of these options on online multiplayer. Unfortunatly, the multiplayer is not put together very good. One of the first problems is everybody online seems as dumb as the AI. You won't find much of a challenge playing online. Second, the problems with cards seeming to be preset is still present. And lastly, there are people who will hold up the games, and the online play offers no protection from that, so it's better to just play by yourself.
Yes, there is Mii Support in this game. But it's not used well. The way they're used in this game is just really ugly. Some of them have square heads and stuff, and it's just all horrible to look at.
Another problem in addition to the bad Mii Support is the overall presentation. It is just really outdated and the developers hardly tried with this game. Wii games are known for looking bad, but this is a serious stretch. Even the Nintendo 64 looks better than this. And the AI probably wasn't so dumb on it either. Another thing in your way is the crappy menu music. It just sounds horrible, and to see the ugly looking Miis tap to it is just really sad. That menu music isn't used during gameplay, and while playing you do hear some of what you'd hear in a casino, but it's just so blantly presented.
This game is just horrible. It looks crappy, plays crappy, and usually sounds crappy. All of this gets so repetetive. Even a begginer would find this too easy. Even if it only costs $5, it's still not worth it. The developers could pay you to play it yet you would play it for only 30 minutes. Don't get it.
