This game is available in a few hours

Anyone going to get it? It's five bucks, so I am definitely going to grab it. Looks interesting, if anything. Though, I heard somewhere that death is permadeath. I'm not sure how to feel about that depending on how long the game is.

#2 Posted by ADAMWD (580 posts) -

Definitely getting it for $5. It's really weird how the game is kind of just coming out. Steam doesn't have it listed under the titles that are coming soon, and they don't even have it priced yet.

I was hoping for an XBLA release but seeing as they said they won't do one(for now..!) I'll probably pick this game when the weekend hits.

#4 Posted by Aishan (1014 posts) -

Might be worth a punt if it's cheap, but I really have no idea how it'll play.

#5 Posted by ervonymous (1297 posts) -

Buying it the moment it hits Steam, hopefully it won't have the plethora of problems SMB had at launch.

#6 Posted by ADAMWD (580 posts) -

So, it unlocked on Steam, but there is no option to purchase the game.

#7 Posted by ervonymous (1297 posts) -

@ADAMWD: Standard Steam procedure, might take even an hour.

Fuck to the cunt yes.

Trailer:

Also, Steam sucks with unlocking releases properly :(

Looks awesome, and its cheap so im getting it. And fuck standard procedure

#11 Posted by 49th (2722 posts) -

I'm still not sure what the game is.

Any idea when this will be out? Still no option to purchase :( Was pretty curious about this game

#15 Posted by Jaloper (41 posts) -

Yep, still waiting. Bummer it didn't come out at exactly 10.

#16 Posted by FiZi (125 posts) -

It should have been out at 10:00am this morning. I heard the price will be $5.00.

I've played about 6 hours of it and it's pretty fun. The art, music and humour in the game is worth at least trying it out.

Do you like Nethack (random dungeons and items), Zelda (level layout) and/or Smash TV (4 directional shooting)? Then you'll probably enjoy The Binding of Isaac.

#17 Posted by Flooder_delete (21 posts) -

Definitely getting this game.

@BeachThunder: Wow, that trailer is haunting. Reminds me of an audio book or something. Which is a good thing.

#19 Posted by DeF (4848 posts) -

I'd love to click the "purchase" button but it's not there yet :(

Can't wait for this stupid game to actually go on sale.

It's an action roguelike.

The game is out, and 10% off!

SWARM! SWARM! SWARM!

#24 Posted by badmanelite (13 posts) -

I'll pick it up when i've got less things to play, seems okay.. looks no where near as deep or fun as SMB though, seems like a standard indie that requires joy2key/Xpadder.

#25 Posted by LordXavierBritish (6320 posts) -

I unlocked piss.

Game of the year.

#26 Posted by CrazyBagMan (839 posts) -

Love it so far, played through about three lives.

#27 Posted by Truitt (92 posts) -

Doesn't seem to have joystick support, though it wouldn't be hard to use Xpadder to add it.

#28 Posted by MaFoLu (1858 posts) -

Just bought the game after listening to the soundtrack for the last hour or so.
Now to see if the actual game is as good as the music.

#29 Posted by HadesTimes (804 posts) -

Game is excellent, just wish it had joystick support.

#30 Posted by ervonymous (1297 posts) -

I just generated a slot machine with a tarot card, got a pill from the machine that made Isaac fart bombs all over the place and involuntarily destroyed the slot machine :(

Picked it up as soon as it unlocked. Didn't get a chance to play very much of it because of some schoolwork, but what little I did was a whole lot of fun.

Also, PICK UP THE SOUNDTRACK!

#32 Posted by SSully (4148 posts) -

What a fucked up little game. It is a great deal of fun, but the soundtrack and the enemies are really weird and a bit creepy. My biggest complaint is that everything is basically activated by walking to it. So one time i killed a boss and the door for the next stage was next to a door with a chest in it, and issac automatically jumped down to the next stage. It is an easy fix.

Also its a great pick up and play game. If you want something that you can kill 30 mins with quick this is your game, its great.

Well, the game is out and it's pretty damn rad.

Quicklook of this, pretty please?

#34 Posted by Deathpooky (1385 posts) -

Bought it - I've had some fun, but getting a little turned off by the difficulty/randomness. Super Meat Boy was difficult, but in small chunks with measurable progress and the ability to get better at it with practice. This is more randomly walk in a room and ten things shoot you to death and hope you get good items. When I was able to upgrade my weapon and health quickly I had a good run, but I've also had some runs where I've gotten little to no useful upgrades and run into a boss that's basically impossible.

I understand it's a roguelike, but I didn't expect it to adhere that closely to the formula when I heard it was coming by part of the team that came from the well-designed genius that was SMB.

#35 Posted by Ramboknife (114 posts) -

MAN, this game is tough...made it to the final boss after about 5 tries, and died. Awesome music though.

#36 Posted by FreakAche (2951 posts) -

Is this game as stupid hard as a lot of other roguelikes are? I've played a bit of Powder and found it to be quite hard.

#37 Posted by deerokus (538 posts) -

This needs to be a quicklook. I stupidly started playing this at 3am (uk time). Now I will be having nightmares, the art and enemy design is so damn unnerving.

#38 Posted by Truitt (92 posts) -

I made an Xpadder layout for it, and I started doing a lot better. Died about 2/3 of the way through. Soooo many items to find.

Yes. It's a roguelike only instead being a turn-based it's action/reflex-based. So I'd argue it's probably even more difficult than normal RPG roguelikes, as you can't even plan out your moves, you normally don't have that many options besides dodging and shooting, and it's pretty easy to go from full life to dead if you run into a particularly difficult room or boss.

I've played through about 8 lives so far and haven't made it past the first area, through some combination of lacking skill, luck or inherent difficulty.

ETA: Never mind. I just discovered what I thought was the first area was actually the entire game? I mean, the game is 5 dollars, but that seems kind of short for a procedurally generated dungeon type game. There appears to be a lot of extra hidden items and stuff at least.

I haven't played the game. To those who have:

Do you guys think the "roguelike" descriptor that comes up nearly every time the game is mentioned is justified, now that you've tried the game? All the video of the game that I've seen leads me to believe that it's really just "Smash TV with RPG elements, and random maps, and the maps look like Zelda." Since the movement is real-time instead of turn-based, it seems like it would make more sense to compare it to an action-RPG like Diablo than a roguelike. Or don't compare it to either, and just call it "RPG Smash TV with random Zelda maps."

There's not really anything about the game that could be considered an RPG; unless you consider Zelda to be an RPG...

I guess Roguelikelike would perhaps be more accurate, much like Spelunky.
